Naked boy in the supermarket...

pookamoo · 31/05/2011 09:01

On the way in to our local supermarket, a mum was with her two DS and one of them was having a wee in the flower bed. No problem with this, DD often has to do this.

However, a little bit later I saw them come into the shop. The DS who was about 3 was naked from the waist down. His mum put him, and his brother, into the food basket part of a trolley, and her DP proceeded to push them round the shop. They didn't put any food in there, the mum was shopping with another trolley.

I am a bit Hmm about children in the trolley anyway but I know that is a whole other thread. But a bare bum and willy going around in the trolley? He wasn't sitting on anything, and he wasn't sitting still either.

I paid for my shopping and was waiting for DH and DD who had popped to the loo, and while I was there I was thinking "do I say something" and in the end I mentioned it to the checkout supervisor.

Was I being unreasonable to do so? I felt a bit bad, because after all, most DCs have accidents, but the supermarket does sell pants so if nothing else they could have got him a pair of pants to put on first...

Poo stripes and piss drips in a food environment is rude and unhygienic. YANBU.

nappyaddict · 31/05/2011 23:29

Perhaps they are on a very strict budget and didn't have enough money spare for pants? Perhaps the boy doesn't like new clothes and it would have created a major tantrum to try and get him to wear new pants? Perhaps he will only wear pants from certain shops or pants in certain colours? Perhaps they are massively eco friendly and don't buy new clothes? Who knows what their reason was, who really cares?

DS (4.11) had an accident at the gym we go to. He sat in the cafe eating his dinner naked from the waist down. And then walked through the corridor, through reception and out onto the car park to the car in the same way. Should I have left him in wet trousers and pants instead?

ChippingIn · 31/05/2011 23:37

Nappy - no - anyone who thinks a bare bum sitting on a seat is making it anymore unhygenic than it already is needs a reality check.

BOF - I know what you mean, I probably would have looked thought 'Bit odd - hope he doesn't hurt himself' and forgotten about it by the time I'd gone down the next aisle.

pookamoo · 31/05/2011 23:39

Would it make a difference if I told you it was Waitrose ? Grin

I'm not really sure why it made me feel uncomfortable, or what I would have done in a similar situation. As it happens, DH and DD didn't quite make it to the loos on time (as mentioned in the OP) DH had a nice wet side to his tshirt and those aforementioned emergency leggings were called into service!

Generally, I know shopping trolleys are not clean, but I do object to feet in trolleys anyway. I don't unwrap my food before I put it away, so I guess my kitchen cupboards and fridge have all that dirt in them too .

To be clear, the little boy seemed completely happy whizzing around in the trolley with his brother, their dad (presumably) doing the pushing while their mum got the food shopping in.

No idea what the checkout supervisor did, by the way, I just mentioned it to her as I was leaving.

I think you should have taken a change of clothes with you, nappy addict, if I'm honest. I'm not keen on kids eating naked, and certainly don't expect to see it in a public café.

leptospirosis · 01/06/2011 00:38

A naked child is much less off putting then the super sweaty gym men leaving their crotch sweat everywhere. They smell worse too. Bet your boy was sat on his t shirt anyway. Naked children, children in trolleys, weeing in bushes...just make me grin.

FreudianSlipper · 01/06/2011 00:58

apparently i stripped off and walked all the way home from the common once when i was about 3 (over a mile) but it was the 70's and being nude was the thing to do

i can not see the problem, i wold imagine he peed and had no other pants (again easy to forget to take extra pants) i probably would have bought some pants or a nappy but they choose not too no big deal and certainly seeing a child with no clothes on should not be considered offensive of uncomfortable for others

i always let ds stand up in the trolley too :)

I think it was good to let a cashier know, so they could wipe the cart down. Most food is wrapped or in a produce bag, but still pretty strange thing for the parents to do.

MDS, what are fanjo gloves?

CheerfulYank · 01/06/2011 03:54

Yes, what are fanjo gloves and why would they be in a dishwasher?

YANBU. A nekkid DC running around on a beach or at home is one thing. Boundaries, people, boundaries!

Tortoiseonthehalfshell · 01/06/2011 04:03

I'm still stuck on ishani saying that she carries a spare pair of pants in every size from 1 to 10 just in case a complete stranger's child needs them. Am I the only one who thinks that's odd.

OP, I'm with you. Given that it was an empty trolley, even if everyone's excuses (maybe the parents only buy ecofriendly pants was my favourite) were right, could the Dad not have waited in the car with the kids while the Mum did the shopping? It's blech and odd and I'm usually on the 'eh, naked parts, whatever' side of things.

AmazingBouncingFerret · 01/06/2011 09:58

I remember seeing some drunk bloke pissing into aload of trolleys once... I bet that happens more often than a child standing up in one and just so happening to have dog shit on their shoes.

Teenytiny · 01/06/2011 16:37

I would be rather shocked....why on earth would you have your childs bits out in a shop?? :/.......sheer stupid there could have been perverts or anything YANBU

changeforthebetter · 01/06/2011 16:41

Kid in a trolley commando - a bit yucky in a supermarket and chilly on his privates but yes, would have catbummed it and carried on.

But, much more importantly, WTF are fanjo gloves????!!!! We demand answers Grin

foreverondiet · 01/06/2011 16:46

YANBU. DS1 often wets himself. If this happened in the supermarket and I didn't have spares I'd do one of the following:

a) go straight home
b) let him wear his wet clothes until we got home
c) take off something like a cardigan (off either him or DD) and make it into a skirt until we got home
d) buy something eg pants/pull ups

Bare bottom not acceptible at any age.

TeaOneSugar · 01/06/2011 16:48

In waitrose Shock.

aliceliddell · 02/06/2011 13:25

For the love of all that's holy! Please tell us - What Are 'Fanjo Gloves'? I've got to go out soon and I need to know

4madboys · 02/06/2011 13:53

the fanjo gloves are on another thread, where a midwife did a sweep and then put the used gloves in the dishwasher as she couldnt find the bin!

and tbh i am a bit Hmm about the gloves and the bare bum in the supermarket. i am all for letting my kids be naked on beach in the garden but not in a supermarket!

and whoever said they let their almost 5yr old sit and eat lunch naked in a cafe because they had had an accident yes that is unreasonable, you either carry spare clothes, fashion something out of a top/cardigan or you take them home! there is a time and a place to be naked and sat in a cafe where other people are eating is NOT the place!

youarekidding · 02/06/2011 14:13

I agree about it more being to do with the social norms than the cleanliness.

I am surprised that no-one yet has mentioned the fact they were using 2 trollies (offending family) or doing supermarket shop en masse (both families) Wink

At that age I always carried 2 spare pants/ bottoms and a pair of pull ups. DS dry during day from 2yo but not at night so just took a pair out.

If he had 3 accidents exhausting all clothes he did occasionally wear pull up and top until it dawned on me to take 3 pairs bottoms! as although backside is cute to me - his mum - it's not so much to others. Grin

OP on the whole I think yanbu.

ScrotalPantomime · 02/06/2011 15:38

I was in macdonalds today (don't shoot me!) and a little girl used the potty and then was put straight on the chair without wiping or knickers.

Confused
AmazingBouncingFerret · 02/06/2011 15:41

I was in McDonalds today too. the worst I saw was two young lads inhaling the helium out the balloons, shooting the straw wrappers and generally being rowdy. I was tempted to leave them there. Grin

eurgh!

ScrotalPantomime · 02/06/2011 16:34

I still quite often do the straw-wrapper-shooting thing Blush

AmazingBouncingFerret · 02/06/2011 18:30

I must admit it was me that taught them to do it. Made my own bed, rod for own back blah blah.. Grin

pigletmania · 02/06/2011 18:39

YANBU, fine on a beach, but in a supermarket! What is that teaching the ds that its ok to walk around half nekkid in public. Sorry not on!
