Oh! Oh! I am HOWLING with laughter! Grin Grin

They have the most fantastic website - it's priceless, I can't see through my tears -

From 'Plan Your Visit' - "Explore the museum before you come and discover all the great things to see and do. You can journey through the history of pencils and pencil making!"

It's only a tenner for a family ticket but for £15 you can visit the bungalow museum as many times as you like during the year! Grin

And the cafe is called SKETCHERS!!!!!

And there's a genuinely spine-chilling wax doll stuck helplessly in a cavern underground - WTF is he doing, mining for those erasers you stick on the end???

Reassuringly, they can take large numbers, and there's a Drawing Zone where you can get hands-on with the pencils

Oh Lord I'm laughing so hard I've nearly thrown up my prawns - surely some MNetter has been there? Is it as AWESOME as it looks?!

Um, OK. Slightly at a loss as to why you were so aggressive, but ne'er mind.

When I was a child I stayed with a family in Germany. I moaned about the lack of animals - they had no pets. So they took me to an animal foetus museum. Looking at dead kittens was not my idea of a good day out.......

BlooferLady · 29/05/2011 22:09

Ah now Punk, there's a wee streak of the Goth in me that'd bloody love that ... the OM & I are looking forward to a trip to the Museum of Surgeons (or whatever) on Lincoln's Inn Fields. Nothing like antique bone-saws and forceps to keep the romance alive Hmm

MsFC · 29/05/2011 22:12

nonno, you seem rather defensive... Is the pencil museum your favourite place? Do you take your fish paste sandwiches there for your lunch hour?

Punkatheart · 29/05/2011 22:14

Yes Bloofer, I have a percentage of goth - a year or two later I would have loved it too! They had some other good exhibits - like a stuffed calf in a snake's mouth. You will love the Royal College of Surgeon's...The Wellcome Collection is great too....

Threadworm8 · 29/05/2011 22:14

I've been to the Pencil Museum, and it was quite a bit more interesting than the Guernsey Tomato Museum so I think you are being uinfair.

BlooferLady · 29/05/2011 22:19

Guernsey tomato museum Grin Grin. Oo Ooo I went to a Wellcome Collection temporary exhibition at the British Museum a while back - it made me feel all sort of light-headed, like I was drunk on sheer gruesomeness. It was ace.

All of these places are making me proud to be English!

Fish paste!

PS threadworm every time I see your name I think of that brilliant MN thread (no pun intended) about the clove of garlic up the arse - have you read it?!

OP posts:
Threadworm8 · 29/05/2011 22:26

Ick. No I think I have been too squeamish for that one. I should get rid of this vile name. It was originally intended to convey that I was as hooked on mn threads as a bookworm is on books. That was years ago; I resurrected it for an oldies thread.

CelebratedMonkey · 29/05/2011 22:26

I went in 1990. Thought it was pretty good back then - but I was 11 and on a highly exciting school trip to the Lakes.

BlooferLady · 29/05/2011 22:28

Oh keep it Thread - I got it & thought you were fearfully witty :)

meliesmummy · 29/05/2011 22:28

There's a seaweed museum in Brittany if any of you are ever stuck for something to do across the channel.

(If you're all not too busy getting hands on with pencils that is)

Threadworm8 · 29/05/2011 22:28

I do remember the giant pencil at Keswick. That was very exciting. It was just like a pencil but (here's the thing) it was much bigger.

waxlyrical · 29/05/2011 22:30

I want to go to all of these places - is there a biro annexe to the pencil museum with its own cafe called jotters and lots of rivalry between the staff I wonder?

EffinNora · 29/05/2011 22:30

This thread is an MN version of the fab book Bollocks To Alton Towers

BlooferLady · 29/05/2011 22:33

"Biro Annexe" Grin

I know, right?! I want to do a tour. Then write a witty yet poignant travelogue, sell the broadcasting rights to BBC4 and have it narrated by Rob Brydon. Y'all can share in the profits

raspberrytart · 29/05/2011 22:33

Cars of the stars isnt there anymore according to my friend who lives in Keswick. She says its moved to Florida??
Pencil museum is shite imo

Threadworm8 · 29/05/2011 22:37

Is the thread consensus that the Pencil Museum doesn't have a point? Does it need to sharpen up? Is it a write-off or is it just swinging the lead?

meliesmummy · 29/05/2011 22:40

link

I need to apologise. It's not a seaweed museum. Oh no. It's something better. It's the museum of unfortunates people who collect seaweed.

I bet you're all booking your ferries now! I am, and on my way I'm going here

Anyone fancy a mumsnet pilgrimage to these wondrous places?

Hulababy · 29/05/2011 22:47

In Bruges I went to a crisp factory :)

waxlyrical · 29/05/2011 22:47

These fabulous places should be MN endorsed as emblems with advert links to them on the home page instead of boring Boden and Mark Warner.

Grin at Rob Brydon pencil narration

Hulababy · 29/05/2011 22:49

Not crisps, sorry. It was chips: www.frietmuseum.be/

LadyBeagleEyes · 29/05/2011 22:50

The Mumsnet Bus tour of crap tourist attractions.
I'm up for that.
And whoever mentioned The Waltzing Waters in Newtonmore -yep - that's a must see on the list.

Hulababy · 29/05/2011 22:52

However, if you ver find yourself in a small village, called Pelhrimov, in the Czech Republic do visit here: www.dobryden.cz/wwwpredsin/klient/default.aspx?path=%2FEnglish%2FTHE-MUSEUM-OF-RECORDS-AND-CURIOSITIES-PELHRIMOV

The home of world records! Very odd little museum, but strangely appealing! DD and her two friends were fascinated.

meliesmummy · 29/05/2011 22:52

Mmmm...chips museum, I would! Did you actually get to eat any? And did you also visit the chocolate museum?
