Help! Just rescued a kitten and can't keep it

First time I've posted - I hope someone can help me!

To try and be brief - a few weeks ago I was walking to work and saw a kitten (6-8 weeks, far too young to be out on its own). Picked it up just as it was about to walk into the road and knocked on doors until I found where it lived, they didn't seem in the least bit bothered, or the fact that it was about to be hit by a car.

An hour ago, walking down the street again, same kitten this time actually in the road. Picked it up, this time the people were on their doorstep just watching their kitten about to be hit by a car (actually going out into ongoing traffic). I picked it up, they came over and said "Do you want it", they said it was theirs but they didn't want it anymore (so had clearly decided to let it get hit by a car to take it off their hands).

I had no choice but to take it home, couldn't leave it to die, but live in a small flat with cats already who will hate it (I've had to lock them in the kitchen for now). Does anyone want a very sweet kitten? I live in North London, and hoping someone can help - I've already phoned rescues but they are all full.

I'm fuming with the awful neighbours.

Fair enough about bathroom. Pointless advice from me given that you have cats and know the layout of your flat better than me.

Good luck.

YellowDinosaur · 29/05/2011 16:46

I was going to suggest contacting vets too - my sister got her kitten this way.

PinotGrigiosKittens · 29/05/2011 16:48

OP, I've messaged Vallhala for you. Shes a god at animal rescue!

SummerRain · 29/05/2011 16:49

Most rescues have foster homes assosiated with them as welll so although they might not have space they should be able to find someone who does.

That being said, I've taken in kittens a few times with older cats and they get used to each other very quickly. The older cats are unlikely to do more than growl, hiss and swipe if it gets too close.

FoundaKitten · 29/05/2011 16:51

Thank you all for the advice. I've also left a message for our vet.

One of my cats probably wouldn't mind, the other one would be miserable, so keeping it (possibly her) isn't an option.

FFS PLEASE DON'T ADVERTISE ON FREE ADS! HE COULD BE ABUSED, BRED AND BRED FROM, EVEN USED AS BAIT FOR FIGHTING DOGS. THE FRONT FOR THESE PEOPLE ARE OFTEN WHAT YOU THINK ARE NICE FAMILIES, YOU WON'T GET ENQUIRIES FROM SHAVEN HEADED THUGS BUT PEOPLE WITH KIDS, WOMEN WHO WILL HAND OVER CATS AND DOGS TO THE THUGS THEMSELVES.

I can find someone to take him if youl'll give me a couple of hours. I'm a rescuer, all those I deal with have a no-kill policy, he may go to a cattery for rehoming, he may, more likely, go to a foster home (possibly this one!).

Can happily offer my phone number for a chat and details of rescue owners for you to call so you can check me out, just pm me. I can arrange for him to be collected - can't do so myself today as have no transport - so collection would probably be tomorrow now, and taken into a rescue/foster home where he will be vet checked, neutered, vaccinated and new owners thoroughly homechecked too.

See - Vallhala is a God !!

FoundaKitten · 29/05/2011 16:58

Vallhala - thank you!

I'm not going to post on freeads, the poor thing has already had an awful start in life. And of course while keeping him is not an option, until we find a home then s/he stays.

Would love to take you up on the offer of help, will try and work out how to PM you with my number.

Like feck I am, Pinot! :o

Found, I've pm-ed you with my number. :) Happy to help if I can.

PinotGrigiosKittens · 29/05/2011 17:07

I love a happy ending :)

:) :)

sausagesandmarmelade · 29/05/2011 17:18

Seriously considered taking the kitten off your hands and asked hubs...but our situation is not ideal (although we aim to get a dog/cat sometime in the future).

Am glad that there is a happy ending...well done you for saving the kitten in the first place. A lot wouldn't have bothered.

Northernlurker · 29/05/2011 17:29

How many cats do you have op? Is it worth introducing kitten to one of them and standing by to rescue if needed then following with the others? If they can get on for a few hours it would make your immediate situation more bearable.

Just a quick update. Vallhala was lovely and very helpful, but in the end a friend of ours took him. So far, he seems super happy and we get to visit him which is a huge bonus! He'll probably be called Aubrey, but she'd still shortlisting names...

Thanks to everyone for the advice (especially Vallhala of course)

Brilliant :)

manicbmc · 30/05/2011 15:14

Lovely Smile

I'm visiting a rescue cat called Daisy tomorrow and hoping that she likes us.

SummerRain · 30/05/2011 15:15

That's great news FaK.... and well done for rescuing him even though your situation was far from ideal. You saved him from a miserable, too short life, I hope you treated yourself to some wine and chocolate Smile

LadyBeagleEyes · 30/05/2011 15:16

I like the name Aubrey.
I'm a sucker for kitten threads with happy endings Smile
