and all over the lawn - it's repulsive! every morning, I have to go on turd patrol before DS is released into the garden. And apparently there is absolutely nothing we can do about it. Angry

Leave out a big bowl of lucozade - problem solved.

TotemPole · 26/05/2011 11:31

TeeBee, What does lucozade do to cats?

KvetaBarry · 26/05/2011 11:33

DH won't piss in the garden :( I have pleaded with him, but he says it isn't right. I have come close to pissing in the garden once or twice, but that's just because DS made me jump.

I think a feral cat plus an inquisitive toddler would be nasty tbh. maybe when he's a wee bit older and less utterly silly.

We had this problem in previous house - had to go out every morning to check and clear up as necessary. Even then DCs always managed to find hidden one(s) by treading in them etc (ie ones that I hadn't seen!) Someone suggested that I sprinkle Olbas Oil on the garden - was a bit Confused about this but it did work. I ended up sprinkling about half a large bottle everywhere, think may have repeated following week and then no prob for year or 2. Then just reapplied

Though think anything else with a pungent smell will work. Think cats like to "go" somewhere that is not "used" by other cats - they will mark their territory by weeing/pooing. So if you mark it with a different smell it will put them off - well that's the theory anyway.

Think Knitter's DH has right idea too - have also heard that saved urine (2 or 3 days worth..) works well as smell becomes more intense over 2 or 3 days. Have not tried this though.

"all over the lawn" doesnt sound like cats to me, it sounds more like foxes...

TeeBee · 26/05/2011 11:38

Cats can't metabolise lucozade, pops 'em off...apparently. Keep theatening it with my bloody neighbours cats because, without fail, every year they shit in my vegetable beds which means the whole lot is ruined.

nijinsky · 26/05/2011 11:40

Befriend the cats and pet them at any opportunity. They will regard your garden as part of their territory and go and shit somewhere else.

nijinsky · 26/05/2011 11:47

I agree it could also be foxes.

IgnoringTheChildren · 26/05/2011 11:53

Lion poo? Not that I've tried it - deterring cats is DH's job! Although I have been known to chase a few out of the garden with a water pistol...

Punkatheart · 26/05/2011 12:08

If you can bear to look at the poo - fox poo is darker, spindle-shaped and fibrous. But behaviourly it sounds like foxes and they will be nursing young now - so out and about spraying, pooing and looking for water/earthworms in the dry weather.

Silent Roar is good - that's the lion poo that has been mentioned. Also male wee...

KvetaBarry · 26/05/2011 12:18

I have given the poo a good visual inspection each time (force of habit after long lab sessions looking for worms at uni!). they all look pretty much the same. there was one the other day which looked more fibrous though, so could potentially be from a fox. we have actually seen a cat squatting once though, and couldn't get the window open fast enough to shout at it, so know well what cat shit looks like now!

so that's great, potentially we have faeces from two species in our garden - woo hoo! how blessed are we?! :o

I shall google silent roar, and also give the olbas oil a shot, as that sounds nicely harmless. I don't want to harm the cats at all (although their owners are another matter), but do want to prevent them from opening their bums on my patch of land!!

Scheherezadea · 26/05/2011 13:19

Get a dog :D

Our dog just loves to chase the neighbours cats. And it means we finally have birds back in our garden! Including the regular owl, and have heard a few hoots from a new one. Blue tits are nesting in their boxes, and sparrows everywhere. Bliss!

Bloody cats, I'd kick them if it didn't run so fast [grumbles]

blondepinhead · 26/05/2011 13:33

I've seen a plant in some garden centres that supposedly acts as a cat deterrent. I don't know how effective it is, but you can find more info on it here.

Those sonic noise things are reasonably audible - my parents have one to scare off foxes, but their creepy and annoying neighbour's laugh sets it off in the daytime and it drove my DD indoors!

NulliusInVerba · 26/05/2011 13:47

Oh god, not another cat shit thread.

Really, anyone would think they were planting land mines in people's fucking pansies.

Cats are very hard to scare off. Not a lot of products work. Cats don't tend to 'go' in their own garden either! However, your neighbour can't really do much about it. It isn't their fault. Short of never ever letting their cat(s) out, what else can they do?

BramblyHedge · 26/05/2011 14:54

We actually did once have a neighbour who pooed in our garden. DP went round and read the riot act. Mr Poo lodged with a drug dealer/ black marketeer/ benefit cheat and they knew that we knew about their activities...he got chucked out of his house for it. Mr Druggy wanted to keep us sweet :-)

... we actually live in a nice road - it was very random. No advice about cat poo though.

blondepinhead · 26/05/2011 15:28

Shock BramblyHedge! How did you know it was him for sure? Did you actually see him doing it? Ick!!!

Punkatheart · 26/05/2011 15:31

The Poo branch of CSI. Brown coats, brown hats, poor sense of smell.

BramblyHedge · 26/05/2011 15:36

Another neighbour caught him with his pants round his ankles in her garden and then saw him move into ours. We have a shared path between houses and gardens.

YankNCock · 26/05/2011 15:45

I heard somewhere that orange peels are supposed to deter them.

(Cats, not neighbours) Grin

KvetaBarry · 27/05/2011 11:40

eeew BrambleyHedge, that is grim!!

however, re: cat poo - we have some good ideas it seems:

orange peel
olbas oil
lion poo
male urine, preferably aged (the urine, not the male)
a dog
your own cat
sonic cat scarer
cat repellant spray
motion detecting water spray
socks Confused
a cat-repelling plant

and re: neighbour poo Blush:
toilet roll
cactus

any other ideas?! :o

Nope. I have no suggestions whatsoever.

But I clicked on this thread so fast I nearly broke my bloody finger!
