To tell my dh his breath smells?

Not just in the morning, most of the time unless he's just cleaned his teeth? Any ideas?

My DH smelled like dead thing when he did Atkins.

He might have an infection and need to go to the dentist?

Bonsoir · 25/05/2011 07:14

Of course you are not being unreasonable - tell him, and suggest he visits the dentist and hygienist. And get him a nice new electric toothbrush and some decent toothpaste and some floss/interdens!

MoreBeta · 25/05/2011 07:23

It can be an early sign of poor health or poor diet. It needs sorting out.

TattyDevine · 25/05/2011 07:25

Right, does he floss?

If you dont floss, you get smelly stuff between your teeth that brushing doesn't fix.

There is a toothpaste and mouthwash range called "Retardex". If he flosses and uses that, it will almost definitely go.

If it doesn't, look at his tonsils. If he has white dots on them, he has tonsil stones and that is what is causing the smell.

It is highly likely to be either of those two things, probably the first. Failing that, gum disease or a sinus problem, but those are less likely without symptoms.

Tell him, buy the retardex and some floss, get him to floss and sniff the floss, if it stinks, tell him that's what his breath smells like!

TattyDevine · 25/05/2011 07:26

Once he's started regularly flossing and has used a tube of retardex and the bottle of mouthwash up with just normal twice daily use, he can keep flossing but go back to normal toothpaste without the problem returning, probably.

BeamMysterious · 25/05/2011 08:00

Is he constipated or does he have any other digestive problems? It might not be anything to do with his teeth or sinuses.

plebshire · 25/05/2011 08:07

Is he drinking enough water?

NestaFiesta · 25/05/2011 08:23

My DH has breath issues but he is diabetic and I think this has a lot to do with it- he is on so much medication! Also, I too am ardently pro flossing. Floss sniffing can convert many a non flosser.

You shouldn't be afraid to tell your DH, just be objective. It's a medical thing not a character flaw.

YADNBU

A sign of a problem if it's not just morning breath.

Gum infection, improperly cleaned teeth or decay - if it doesn't sort itself out with better oral hygiene, get him to the dentist/dental hygienist.

Punkatheart · 25/05/2011 08:26

Being dehydrated is the most common thing. Then infection in his mouth or generally poor diet.

lesley33 · 25/05/2011 08:32

With bad breath, problems with teeth and gums is the most likely cause. You need to get him to go to a dentist.

If that doesn't sort it he needs to go his GP. Although not as common, there are lots of medical problems and medication that can cause bad breath. For example, problems or chronic infections in the lungs can cause this.

But of course you need to tell him so that he can get it sorted.

YANBU - tell him! I kept telling DP that he had breath that smelled like fish - he eventually accepted it after about a week and went to the dentist who told him he had a dead and rotting wisdom tooth (which is why it wasn't hurting him) which he had to have removed. All better now.

boilingpoint · 25/05/2011 08:53

Yanbu. When me and dp got together his breathe was quite frankly rank, he got some mouth spray and that worked well.

Tell him nicely so you don't upset him.

Toygirl · 25/05/2011 09:55

I tell my DH all the time. He doesn't like it but I asked if he would rather go around and not know? The reason he gets it, is because he gets tonsillitis a lot.

Thingumy · 25/05/2011 10:08

A decent mouthwash,a tongue scraper and a trip to the dentist should sort it out.

heleninahandcart · 25/05/2011 11:39

I'm in the Retardex camp. Toothpaste, tongue scaper, flossing with those little interdental brushes then Retardex rinse. This should sort it if its gum disease.

Its expensive but it works.

Also agree if this doesn't sort it, trip to GP. Good luck
