to not want to go on strike?

This is about teacher's pensions. If the NUT ballot goes that way, there will be a strike in June. I agree that what the government is proposing is shocking, and that this is a serious issue. But I don't want to go on strike for various reasons, some ideological, and some (admittedly short term thinking, but for my family of great practical importance at the mo) financial.

One of my colleagues is quite militant in general, and a union rep, and is not very happy about my stance. I think there are three of us who don't want to strike for various reasons.

Would I be wrong to not strike if the majority decide they do want to?

Not if he has to teach til he's 68 CRS Wink

I don't know what the average life expectancy is now (73 for a man?) but given how much its increased over the last 50 years I can imagine than in 50 years yes, 93 would be average.

Perhaps we can be a half striking household, and since I am a dramatically unhealthy 33 year old smoker and exercise - o - phobe, and he is a gym obsessed my-body - is - a - temple 31 year oldvegetable lover, he can protect his pension, and not worry about mine since the likelihood is, I won't be around to be fussed?

(Just to be flippant for a minute - was alarmed at my uncharacteristic seriousness...)

Life expectancy is higher than it was, many people now live to a great age; my father was 101 when he died ladt year and my mother is 94 and still hale and hearty.
We also have to think of new entrants to the profession.

"What makes you think public won't support. I think there will be a lot of public support on this one".

And it will last until about the second day of strikes. Because of all the parents who are losing a day's pay. Especially as everyone will be working to 68, and many have a far more precarious pension situation.

(BTW, sorry all my posts come over as negative! It's not because I want to bash - as someone noted above, I'm trying fling in some of the downsides).
