they have to justify their jobs. load of absolute bollocks, they clearly said they would not kill the birds then when people let them use their gardens to trap them they went back on their word. id be livid. i cant see what harm they do either. the excuse is their droppings??? surely swallows cause more damage?

Wicked bastards!
There is no need for this, as the UKs only HUMANE bird control advisory service will attest. PICAS advise and work with councils and government bodies as well as businesses across the UK to address the issue of bird problems WITHOUT killing them and are successful, knowledgable and respected. So what's the excuse of these wankers?
Sorry, but I hate cruelty.
Thanks for letting us all know about this. The answer might be to email FERA, sending them a link to PICAS website and cc-ing PICAS into it. Plus, post the article all over the web via FB and get animal rights organisations involved.
I'm off to do just that right now.

I saw a documentary where one vine grower in Kent had had his entire crop - £35k worth - eaten by parakeets. Put him out of business and he lost his home. It will be disastrous if these birds drive other native species out - especially if they compete for nesting and roosting sites with predatory birds in areas like Bushy Park (where it says they are driving out other species). Mice and rats will multiply no end, for starters.
Ecology is about a delicate balance - not parakeets eating everything in sight, while American crayfish devour all the wildlife in rivers etc!
I feel fro individual parakeets - we have a nouisy bunch that fly over our garden - but to care for nature as whole you have to look at the bigger picture.
