blue and pink clothes? I really don't get it. Fair enough if you don't like either pink, blue or both, if you want to dress a boy from head to toe in pink, fine, or a girl in blue, also fine. But why act as if clothing manufacturers are doing something terrible with pink dresses?

Is it just me who does not have a problem with dressing boys in blue and girls in pink (sometimes)?

YANBU.

redexpat · 23/05/2011 17:49

My problem is that sometimes those are the only 2 options!

redvelvetmooncupcake · 23/05/2011 17:56

I don't mind pink and blue. I do mind slogans like "Future WAG" and a horrific one I saw on a small boy "sorry girls, I only do models".

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 23/05/2011 17:57

It's not really fair though... a girl can wear pink and blue equally... a boy can't, not until they start wearing tasteful, muted pink shirts with ties.

Casey76 · 23/05/2011 18:26

I have seen quite a few boys with pink jumpers, trainers etc just lately....

crashingwaves · 23/05/2011 18:27

Mmm yes but then is a boy's life going to be so dramatically different if he doesn't wear pink? DS has never worn it (he was a very girly looking baby!)

I prefer lilac, sea green and yellow myself for girls but I do think some pink is just fine! :)

Where do you shop? I find loads of choice to be fair.

GwendolineMaryLacey · 23/05/2011 18:36

I've never found it a problem and shop in the usual Next, Sainsburys, George, M&S. DD has a variety of colours.

crashingwaves · 23/05/2011 18:38

Yes, I splash out sometimes in Monsoon because I just can't resist - the bulk of both children's clothes are from Tesco and M & S though. My girls' choices are quite, well, girly but not pink. I am prone towards floral designs though! :D

I'd have liked to see more unisex clothes when my boy/girl twins were babies. Although I'd like to see more choice, pink and blue clothes aren't as big a bugbear for me as pink and blue toys.

I did wonder about peoples' perceptions when we were out. I lost count of the number of times I was asked if they were brothers, despite DD being dressed head to toe in neon pink or a dress - I assume because of her short hair.

oldraver · 23/05/2011 18:39

When my DS1 was little there was more choice than today. Lots of unisex stuff as well. Mothercare used to do a range with basic stuff, eg t-shirt, sweatshirt several style of trouser, dungarees in a range of four colours. Non of it was gender specific

flyingspaghettimonster · 23/05/2011 18:48

I like traditional pink for a girl and blue for a boy as sometimes it is tough to tell what sex a baby is by other means... but then, I also like traditional baby gowns for both sexes until about 6 months, and so many people were horrified at photos of my youngest wearing a white cotton baby day gown... I accessorised it with blue trimmed booties and a blue blanket, but nobody realised he was a boy even then... people are very set in their ways about what equals girl and what equals boy... personally I thought he looked so much cuter and more comfy than tiny babies stuffed into jeans and fred perrys...

manicbmc · 23/05/2011 18:50

My gripe is with pyjamas for older girls (7+) - always pink or lilac. So I used to have to buy dd boys ones as she wouldn't go near anything remotely girly.

Firawla · 23/05/2011 18:51

OP yanbu i agree there is plenty of choice available, i think some people make too much fuss about it claiming as if there is nothing but pink pink pink for girls and brown 'naughty boy' sloganned t shirts for boys, its not the case.

SmethwickBelle · 23/05/2011 18:53

I have always found the choice for boys in most shop to be pretty good - OK you get a glut of pirate/skull/skater/monster/monkey themes but you can pick decent coloured stuff.

Monsoon is appalling for boys clothes. It is like they spent all day giddy with excitement on designing the absolutely exquisite girls ranges and at ten to midnight went fuck...... shove a lamp post and a roundabout on a blue sweater, boys like road stuff.

mrsravelstein · 23/05/2011 18:53

agreed, i wonder where people shop that they can't find perfectly nice kids clothes in lots of alternative colours. (ds2 happens to be sporting a neon pink t shirt today courtesy of Mr Next)

SnuffleTurtle153 · 23/05/2011 18:55

Friends of ours got us a pink, flowery baby-gro with a pic of a purple mouse with long eye lashes holding a flower. For our son. We'd found out the sex at the 20 week scan so it wasn't like they'd bought it prior to his arrival and didn't want to waste it. I was a bit Hmm (though being the cowardly polite person I just thanked them (then later gave it to a friend who has a little girl)). I'm all for metrosexual but there are limits. Babies tend to look a bit genderless in the early weeks and I didn't want people telling me my DS was a lovely little girl!

olibeansmummy · 23/05/2011 19:11

My boy has more pink and yellow than any other colour. He's 2 I. 2 days a d very boyish but looks lovely in those colours and I like him to look a little different :)

Punkatheart · 23/05/2011 19:13

I dress every day in pink frou-frou dresses with matching knickers. I am a girl after all.

Too much?

That should say 2 in 2 days and...

mrspnut · 23/05/2011 19:39

I have a girl who likes boys stuff, so I buy her boys clothing. I can manage to find things that are acceptable to both of us quite easily.

I allow skulls and pirate stuff but no slogans.
I hate the girls things must be pink and boys must be blue in general but when it comes to clothing it really doesn't matter.
My daughter even wears boxer shorts, because you can't buy knickers with star wars on them.
