To be annoyed with the check out man at Sainsburys?

I went into Sainsburys this afternoon as I had a scan due and was killing time without stopping long enough to pee. I picked up some organic snacks, a few tins of soup and a punnet of cherries and 2 loose peaches in a bag.

I got to the til, and there was a man serving. He said;

"Do you need bags?"

I said; "Yes please".

And he gave me one. I then said;

"Can I have another one so I can bag my fruit separately from the tins?"

To this, he glared at me, tutted, looked from me back to the few items I had, shook his head and said;

"The poor environment" and slammed one down.

Now, as far as I'm aware the bags are free and I'm entitled to them. It isn't compulsory for me to take my own bags in (which in all fairness I usually do for a planned shop, which this was not). But I feel that it is none of his damn business how many bags I need, as they are not being paid for out of his own personal packet. I may be hormonal, but is it the job of a shop worker to tell me about the state of the environment?

Well, in a lot of shops, and this is only going to increase, you do have to pay per bag and some have even stopped using plastic bags altogether. He was being a bit rude but you are not 'entitled' to them, IMO.

I had this once in M&S when the cashier glared and tutted at me for not having my own bags- I don't shop there any more

but if they are free and not pay-per-bag, then why the bloody hell can I not bag my perishables from tins? It isn't as though I wanted to bag each item in its own bag. I'm rather quite mad about it, he made me feel like a criminal.

Are you the customer who I served the other day - laughed when I asked her if she needed a bag for her book and said to me "How on earth do you expect me to carry it. It really annoys me when YOU shop assistants ask me if I need a bag!"

On the other hand, the shop assistant you had seemed very rude but maybe he had served my customer before you.

If I had another hand though, why should it not be the job of a 'shop worker' to tell you about the state of the environment. We do know an awful lot about carrier bags after all!

Well MadameHooch, without causing offence, I do not shop in a supermarket to be given a lesson by whomever is working on the till. I'm usually good at asking for advice and I can't help thinking if I wanted his tuppence worth on the environment, I'd probably have asked for it.

Most supermarkets have a carrier bag recycling bin and if I don't have any bags with me I sometimes retrieve a few bags from the recycling bin on my way in.

It is, but a nice person wouldn't behave as though they thought so.

Coffee, but would you put tins in with loose fruit and organic puff crisps? I just didn't want the fruit to be bruised in the car.

Shop workers are the lowest of the low to some folk - i have worked in our local village shop for two years (don't any more) - and people think they can talk to you like shit on their shoe....so i do know where you are coming from madame.

But i never got judgy about carrier bags that people needed (marvellous happy shopper ones in my case) - i never felt it was up to me to do so...

See previous threads where people complain when shop assistants have no interaction with customers. I did concede that he was being rude but no, it is not all shop assistants' jobs to 'scan things and take money.'

Anyway, I'm getting vertigo from standing on my soapbox too long! I hope baby doesn't keep up the trampolining on your bladder. I remember that feeling all too well.
