crap? I've never understood the attraction myself, hence the reason i'm not a member. From reading alot of the threads on here, I get the impression that it causes more harm than good.

I mean just look at all the references to FB on AIBU, alone. Sad, very sad.

I love FB. I live abroad and it is a fantastic way to keep up with my family and friends. Mind you, I have nice family and friends, who mostly don't post a load of old bollocks.

Bearinthebigwoohouse · 22/05/2011 22:31

It's a great way of keeping in touch with lots of different groups of friends. Used in the right way I think it's good.

dangerousdebbie1 · 22/05/2011 22:34

Bearinthebigwoohouse

But can't you do thay by email or MSN? like I said, I don't use it.

OP posts:
Portofino · 22/05/2011 22:35

But if you never use it, how can you say it is crap?

Punkatheart · 22/05/2011 22:37

Yes but people are highly likely to post lovely and positive comments about Facebook on AIBU. All groups have their spats, problems and quibbles. Like Portofino, I keep in contact with friends and family - some of whom live all over the world. My friends are mostly writers, actors and artists - so I can keep up with their successes, commiserate with their frustations. No one wastes my time telling me they had cornflakes for breakfast, or bitching.

It is all about balance. Remember that people once said that the telephone was evil and that trains would end the world.

You cannot blame Facebook for people's behaviour - they would behaviour that way either face to face or in a group anyway. Also this is a new form of media and people are actually still adjusting to the etiquette of using it.

I am also quite isolated - being poorly - so Facebook doesn't sap my energy but keeps me in touch.

Sirzy · 22/05/2011 22:37

No you can't Debbie. On fb I can allow friends and family around the world a chance to see photos of Ds quickly and easily.

We still use email/skype/phone etc but Facebook does help a lot.

Oakmaiden · 22/05/2011 22:37

I love facebook. It lets me keep in touch with people who I wouldn't otherwise keep in touch with, but who I would really prefer not to lose touch with.

There are occasionally odd or irritating status posts on there, but I just ignore the ones that bug me. And I like to be able to keep up with what is going on with people....

It has become even more important to me since I moved away from my home area and is the main way I keep in touch with some people.

nah it's pretty much great.

FabbyChic · 22/05/2011 22:39

MSN is dated, Skype is the in thing now.

HaughtyChuckle · 22/05/2011 22:40

I like FB

squeakytoy · 22/05/2011 22:40

When the internet first came out, plenty of people who didnt use it were sceptical, and it was blamed for all the faults in the world... times have moved on, and now social networking is a major part of most peoples lives. Very soon we will have a generation who have grown up never knowing life without Facebook pages.

(no doubt people were scathing about telephones, newspapers and the tv when they all began to play a large part in everyday life.

I am not saying everyone should be on it, but it is how you use it that makes the difference.

Punkatheart · 22/05/2011 22:41

I meant UNLIKELY to post lovely and positive comments....

HRHShoesytwoesy · 22/05/2011 22:44

yabu, how can you say you don't like it if you haven't tried it

Bearinthebigwoohouse · 22/05/2011 22:44

I don't use msn and email isn't quite the same. I love looking at what others are up to, which music they are listening to, their photos. I think it's a great way of keeping in touch with people and getting an insight into their daily lives and what's going on, I love how we can all pile in and support someone when they're down, celebrate with them when they're happy. I'd never keep up with everyone like that otherwise, I know too many people.

usualsuspect · 22/05/2011 22:46

I like fb ,I only have family and people I actually like on my Fb ...not 567 randoms ,so I'm interested in their updates

NeverAttributeToMalice · 22/05/2011 22:53

Also, it's a take-it-or-leave-it way of telling people about your life. If someone sends me an email of, say, their holiday photos, I may feel obliged to respond, whereas if they post on FB, I can ignore with seeming rude. I find it gives me a much better sense of what's going on in friends' lives than a more formal but less frequent email/letter/phonecall.

I agree with Punk that FB behaviour tends to mirror a person's RL behaviour. And of course, you're free to block others or just not set up an account.

Mandy2003 · 22/05/2011 23:01

I would be quite pleased if Mumsnet HQ would consider banning any references to FB spats or inappropriate behavior on FB here please!

Perhaps have a separate topic for FB issues only Hmm

I don't use it on principle, I think if I had a lot of people to keep in touch with via the internet I would use Skype.

TrillianAstra · 22/05/2011 23:05

If you judged everything in life by its appearances on AIBU you'd think everything did more harm than good.

hmc · 22/05/2011 23:06

It depends - I am selective in my fb friends. We have witty, amusing and erudite exchanges.

Tommy · 22/05/2011 23:09

another one who loves FB here but I don't use it to wash my dirty linen and tend to hide anyone who posts exceedingly dull or rude statuses.

NerfHerder · 22/05/2011 23:16

Mandy- there already is a facebook topic on MN... unfortunately no feckers keep to it!
