I've just bought it to have a read, but have scanned the article, and he's also named inside! Don't know how they got away with that. :)

Is it the Scottish Sunday Herald? That's a good way to revive flagging sales - the paper is in dire trouble. Hope this saves it, I love the Herald!

Ah, yes it is Grin

MollysChamber · 22/05/2011 10:21

I love the Herald too.

More than ever today.

BrawToken · 22/05/2011 10:26

Not sure about the magazine format, but the editiorial and news reporting is spot on Molly.

vmcd28 · 22/05/2011 10:26

I wonder how/if they'll get away with this... Possibly a fine is the most they can get, which is worth it if they get loads of publicity :)

I love the Herald as well, just dispatched dh for the Sunday papers so I can get a read as well.
I am no big fan of Imogen but this has been awful for her he has used his porition and wealth to make sure she got all the flack and hate mail for this affair and it just leaves such a horrible taste.

nijinsky · 22/05/2011 10:32

The twat and his wife seem to have gone on a bit of a publicity campaign to raise the profile of their marriage, involving his newly very slimmed down wife posing for photographers in ultra glam designer frocks at high profile parties.

Anyone see the irony? They want publicity from the media, but only that which they like and is favourable to them. I know politicians get away with this sometimes, but truth will out.

This would all have been over by now and everyone would have forgotten about it if he weren't trying to stifle it still.

vmcd28 · 22/05/2011 10:47

Given that he's coming to the end of his football playing career, is there any way that he might be wanting this publicity?

OP posts:
MollysChamber · 22/05/2011 10:48

For his new career as a "gigolo"? Grin Barf.

vmcd28 · 22/05/2011 11:15

Molly, a Giggolo :)
But why the hell is his wife still with him?!

OP posts:
fatlazymummy · 22/05/2011 11:25

vcmdWhy shouldn't his wife still be with him? Plenty of couples stay together after 1 partner has been unfaithful. It's entirely up to them.

darleneoconnor · 22/05/2011 11:26

They can probably do that because Scotland is a different legal jurisdiction to England.

Any Scottish media lawyers on MN?

darleneoconnor · 22/05/2011 11:29

There is no sign of it on their website, though.

vmcd28 · 22/05/2011 11:43

fatlazy um yes thanks, I'm well aware of that. But this isn't simply a man being unfaithful. It's a rich man trying to buy silence, while imogen gets hate mail etc etc. He's behaving like an immature, spineless, slimy twat.

It's a really interesting problem, the whole idea of 'he should be held accountable to his fans and the people who buy his products' Why? I love books and literature, for example. If I was to stop buying books written by people who were not morally outstanding people, I'd be left a bit short. I guess I'm just really not comfortable with the label of role model, it's just such a ridiculous and unnecessary premise. I enjoy football, but these are just people whose job it is to play football. No more, no less. If they want to be cheating, sleazy scumbags, surely they have the exact same perogative as the rest of us?

For what it's worth, I think it's important that the press can report this, but also that people start to realise that these things make no difference in the long run to anybody except the families involved.

who gives a monkeys

vmcd28 · 22/05/2011 11:55

Lucy, I agree, but the example you gave of an author is completely different. RG has made a fortune due to endorsements etc, and the rest of his money is from fans' pockets. He's made the whole thing worse, keeping people talking about what a twat he is, rather than let it blow over and give his wife and kids a tiny bit of respect. He's well known as being a responsible family man, and he's now ruined that image that partly made his fortune.
Kate Moss lost millions of pounds worth of jobs when she was pictured snorting coke.

vmcd28 · 22/05/2011 11:57

Oh, and many years ago footballers simply did it for the love of the game, but nowadays it's also to do with the associated lifestyle of fame and fortune

vmcd - they will get away with it because its now known that the superin junction doesnt apply in Scotland! They would have had to apply to a Scottish court for this, and they didnt as Scotland has a separate legal system -its all over Sky news just now. They are not breaking any law by publishing his picture - but they would be if they put it on their website ebcause people outside Scotland could access it then, wheras the paper coper has to be physically bought in Scotland. And nothing to stop someone buying a copy in Scotland and taking it into England eh! Grin

stickytoffeepud who gives a monkeys

All of us nosey interested people thats who Grin

LucySnoweShouldRelax · 22/05/2011 12:26

vmcd I can see your point, but I am inclined to feel that most of his endorsements come from him being a good footballer for one of the biggest companies/football teams in the world. Yes, he had a reputation as a family man, but I wouldn't say he based his image around it, in fact it was kept in the background, unlike, say, Kaka, for example.

Ifelt similar when the Kate Moss story broke, I mean, was anyone actually surprised by that? And yes, obviously the more 'family friendly' brands withdrew endorsements, and kept most of the high end stuff, and even went on to design that muck for Topshop. Did her professional reputation really suffer as a result? I just don't feel it did.

I'm not sure what Giggs' endorsements were, but I would imagine that a lot of them were aimed at young men who, depressing though it may be, probably think it adds to his rep.

Vallhala · 22/05/2011 12:33

Lucy, re your post at 11.45, I couldn't agree more. Anything else is just salacious titillation for the masses.
