To think that this is totally unacceptable, particularly on a Sunday

We live on a busy main road, which is currently being dug up due to gas works. These works go on from 7am - 6pm on weekdays and 9am to 1pm at weekends. These works will go on for 4 months. Its not ideal, and has been very noisy and has made working from home difficult for me.

This morning I was looking forward to peace and quiet until 9am, but the builders merchants opposite us begain drilling and erecting scaffolding at 7am this morning. I phoned them to complain and was told that its 'not their problem'. This has happened before (noisy construction work very early at weekends) but seems worse in light of all of the road noise iyswim?

I know that living on a busy main road in London we must expect some noise, but aibu to think that this is unacceptable?

Isn't there a law that they can't start noisy work until 9am?

namestaken · 22/05/2011 08:39

I thought so, but not sure how this law is enforced or who to complain to?

That's the question, eh?

I would start with the council, maybe environmental health?

Your local authority with have a noise abatement officer who will have the terms of the construction works, although not sure about for the builder's merchant. Noise abatement normally forms part of Environmental Health. It would also be useful to contact the customer services of whoever is doing the gas works (Transco/National Grid I presume), there should be a number to ring on the road works' signage.

If the builder's merchant is part of a large chain (Jewson, Howden, Howarth etc) then get in touch with their HO if the local branch has been useless.

The longer the hours of work the sooner it's done, and they can't waste daylight. Get over it.
