My friend has told me if I don't get my ds a jumperoo he will be a late walker as he will not have the opportunity to develop his leg muscles. Makes me wonder how our ancestors ever moved beyond the crawling stage.

I am instinctively against these kinds of things anyway, I know quite a few babies who are tippy-toe walkers who have spend a lot of time scooting around in a baby walker. Am not sure that the jumperoo is quite as bad, but my friend seems to think it is ESSENTIAL Hmm. Just wanted to vent!

I put my DD in a walker and she loved it, she was also taking her first steps at 10 mths so no harm done in her case. She's now a very active 8yr old.

LaWeasel · 21/05/2011 19:42

My DD had such chubby thighs she didn't fit in the bumbo Blush Now I can pretend it was for her health!

She was a late walker. I can't say I really care about that, why the jeff would it matter when they start walking?

southofthethames · 21/05/2011 19:42

I agree with OP. I don't even think jumperoos and walkers are all that safe. Never had one, and no problems with walking, running or getting around. I am told that Canada has banned baby walkers because of a lot of serious accidents that occurred when it couldn't stop in time. I think parks and playgrounds are essential though :-)

JenaiMarrHePlaysGuitar · 21/05/2011 19:53

Bloody hell! I thought they were those door bouncers with the striped bits on.

I take back my "fab" comment. They're hideous. Door bouncers are fab, though.

ShushBaby · 21/05/2011 19:55

Indeed LaWeasal- why on earth does it matter if a child is an 'early' or 'late' walker? A friend's baby walked at 9 months, mine at 15 months. Both are perfectly healthy and happy and both got there when they got there.

I find it absolutely nauseating when parents try to push forward their child's development, or see it as some kind of achievement or mark of distinction when they reach normal milestones early.

Barring something being wrong- in which case a child would still be fabulous!- they all reach these milestones eventually.

Parents smugly announcing that their LO rolled over 2 months ahead of schedule makes me shudder.

Anyway bloody waste of money to fork out fifty quid on something they'll use for five months. Same goes for bumbos.

God sorry for rant! Was unexpected even to self!

But yes, OP, YANBU.

jeckadeck · 21/05/2011 19:55

I have no idea what a jumperoo is but anyone who claims that babies suddenly need something for development which people haven't needed for the last several millennia is talking out of their arse.

edam · 21/05/2011 20:03

be careful of using baby bouncers to amuse your child while you cook or do something else... dh tried that with ds. Dh was typing away quite happily looking at work emails. Only when he looked round, ds had been amusing himself picking the phone cable away from the wall. I went apeshit as it was held in place by ruddy sharp pins - thankfully no damage but dh was left with strict instructions to keep an eye on ds at all times!

sungirltan · 21/05/2011 20:04

jeckadeck - i totally agree and have avoided any toy/item which claims to affect development apart from the natural stuff (building blocks etc). i'd rather dd gets to her milestones in her own time.

i''m pretty sure a healthy baby living in a loving clam environment will reach all their milestones when they are supposed to, without all this plastic!

on a sidenote and i dont like making statements like this, all dd's baby chums were taken to baby signing (i could have a huge rant about that but its another thread), i thought it was tosh and just did the normal chattering to dd about what i was doing all the time and naming everything. dd at 19 months has 170 words which is about 100+ more than her pals. i know they will all catch up in there own time and all is more than well but to me it proves all this development forcing is a waste of money and time!

beamel · 21/05/2011 20:04

YANBU but your friend is an idiot suggesting that your childs development will be affected if you don't purchase this piece of overpriced plastic shite !
Sounds like she is trying to justify her own waste of money purchase.

beamel · 21/05/2011 20:06

I making the assumption that she has a jumperoo.
