To be PMSL about the cat next door and a filter full of coffee grounds?

kreecherlivesupstairs · 20/05/2011 12:38

One of the nine next door had just settled down for a nice crap in my garden. As it happened, the back door was open and I had just taken the filter out to throw away. My arm didn't belong to myself and it landed on the cat's back.
I have thought of the likely outcome. The cat will groom itself and get a real caffeine jolt.

Nine cats next door!!!!

frgaaah · 20/05/2011 12:42

YABU. There are perfectly valid cheap methods to get animals to stop crapping in your garden. Instead of hoping it intakes too much coffee (isn't any coffee probably too much for dogs and cats?) and throwing stuff at it, go and buy some lion poo pellets or spray it with some harmless water.

I don't have a cat or a dog, and those are some things I know about off the top of my head - go and look into some more ideas, I'm sure there are lots around which will be effective.

Yeah!

"If enough is eaten it can be fatal for both dogs and cats. The lethal dose of caffeine for dogs and cats is 150mg/kg body weight, and regular instant coffee contains over 60mg caffeine per teaspoon - so for a 3 kg cat 8 teaspoons of coffee would be potentially fatal, and there is NO ANTIDOTE."

"coffee grounds are toxic, it contain caffeine, a stimulant that some times will make the cats heart beat faster. causing distress."

"The smaller the cat, the less time it takes for a reaction.
The thing that makes it toxic to cats is called Theobromine. This is also in chocolate. If they have eaten coffee ground, take it to the vet asap."

Hmm. I guess you didn't give him anything more than a lick or two, so it should be ok. But thats going by random internet postings, so I hope they're right and the little thing's heart is ok.

They have been warned time and time again. I don't hate the cats I just hate their shit. DD occasionally plays digging up, she commented about clay a couple of weeks ago. As our soil is like sand I told her it was unlikely. the fact that it smelt like a turd confirmed my suspicions.
Zukie, I will be getting a couple of kittens in August. They will have a litter box.

OP posts:
TooManyBlossoms · 20/05/2011 12:51

But kreecher, unless you're planning on keeping your kittens inside permanently, litter box or not they WILL poo outside! And probably not in your garden, as they prefer to go elsewhere, ie in a neighbours garden.

So while this may solve your problem - one of the best ways to keep cats out your garden is to get one of your own - someone else may well be complaining about your cats using their garden as a toilet.

Frgaaah , I'd be pretty sick if I ate 8 teaspoons of instant coffee too. We're talking about the powder yes? not a sip from a cup of coffee.

The cat is hardly likely to eat it. If they ate everything they saw no cat would survive their first day.

zukiecat, I'd pay your vets bills out of the rent I'd charge you for housing your cat in my garden. I'd spend the remaining profit on a nice holiday.

WestYorkshirePudding · 20/05/2011 12:53

Great! Now I've found out caffeine is poisonous to cats, I'll stock up for the local ones who insist on crapping in our gardens every night.

Off to phone OH and tell him to good news Grin

kreecherlivesupstairs · 20/05/2011 12:54

Then I may have to rethink my idea. I do like cats a lot, but the idea that they go and soil someone elses garden makes me angry.
We do have a teeny tiny garden now, the one we are moving to is about 8 times the size. I don't want to be trying to make it nice and have feline shitters destroying it. Not even my own.
DD will be distraught.

May I suggest guinea pigs instead then Kreecher? They make fab pets, will mow the lawn for you, and their poop makes fantastic fertilizer for your garden Smile.

Happymm · 20/05/2011 13:09

Must admit, not a cat lover myself. And really hate their poo in my garden, especially amongst my veggies, which we then are supposed to eat . I do chase the fuckers off if I see them:o

ZZZenAgain · 20/05/2011 13:10

9 cats ...
OMG

EmmaBemma · 20/05/2011 13:10

That is a really nasty thing to do. The cat will have to eat the coffee grounds when it cleans itself. Cats don't understand about human boundaries and why shitting in gardens is wrong.

If you do ever get a cat, I'd be worried about its wellbeing. That said, I hope it shits in your garden every day.

kreecherlivesupstairs · 20/05/2011 13:20

To be fair, the grounds were only slightly moist. If Sebastian (I think that's its name) gives himself a good shake, they should fall out.
The grounds were a tablespoon at most and had been through the machine. I imagine the majority of the caffeine had gone.

BitOfFun · 20/05/2011 13:23

Don't get a cat- get a very cute dog instead. Much better behaved because you can train them. Cats just please themselves.

kreecherlivesupstairs · 20/05/2011 13:29

I'm sorry BoF, I'd rather chew my own leg off than have a dog like that. It's a Staffer or nothing for me.
DD is quite happy with the idea of two kittens. It was the carrot to cheer her up about our impending move to England.

BitOfFun · 20/05/2011 13:32

You clearly have a heart of stone

LordOfTheFlies · 20/05/2011 13:33

TooManyBlossoms guniea-pigs are groovy and you know the old story about 'hold one up by the tail and it's eyes pop out?'
Well one of ours had a bit of a tail, (slightly longer spine than normal). We had twelve over a period of years and she was one of our mad homegrown ones!
kreecher cold warer, very cold.Doesn't harm cats, gives them a fright.I would not have minded someone throwing a jug of water at our moggie.Unless it was still in the jugGrin

belgo · 20/05/2011 13:34
Grin Kreecher if you want a guinea pig I am quite desperate to get rid of one or two!
aldiwhore · 20/05/2011 13:36

You warned the cats??

I'd buy some repellent, cat shit isn't nice. I'm an owner of an outdoorsy cat but she's quite good and shits under a hedge in our garden, nowhere else.

Dropdeadfred · 20/05/2011 13:36

my cats are outdoor cats and they still mew to come in and crap in their litter tray!! Hmm

kreecherlivesupstairs · 20/05/2011 13:38

I have been accused of having a heart of stone many times. Mainly by DD.
I don't want guinea pigs, there is a glut of them at DDs school at the moment.
I warn the cats with water, I don't give them a stern telling off. They speak Flemish.
I also don't make a habit of throwing coffee at them. I just happened to be making myself one and had taken the old filter out to put in the compost bin.
