To not understand when people think their car is safer on their driveway than anywhere else?

Just noticed there's been a few posts where people say they leave their car unlocked if it is on their driveway and wondered where the logic is in that. Do you really think that criminals would think 'oh, best not go and rob that car as it is on private property'? I am sorry to those that have had their car/belongings stolen but that isn't the point of my question.

I guess if someone really wants to steral your car then they will steal it no matter where it is.

Whilst if they are just going to wander past and try a door handle in passing/notice that a car isn't locked then that is less likely to happen if your car is on ther drive than if it is parked on the road - what with it being unusual for people to just casually saunter down your drive....

So I would imagine an unlocked car is less likely to be stolen by an opportunist if it is on a drive - but it would make no difference to someone who was planning a theft.

Not that anyone would be likely to plan to steal my car. Even an opportunist would probably decline,m to be honest!

Insurers used to reduce your premium slightly if your car was kept on the driveway, rather than on the street, so I guess that there is a residual notion that cars are safe on the drive. Of course it's a fallacy (which is why that discount is no longer available) the only things a driveway-parked is safer from than a kerb-parked car are accidental damage and RTAs.

Because it is safer. Statistics show this to be the case. But it does depend on individual circumstances. So if all houses have their cars on the driveway it makes no difference. If you have a shut gate to your driveway rather than an open space it is less likely to be targetted. Although if you have a premium sports car for example parking on the drive will make no difference.

Basically parking on the drive reduces your chance of opportunist thieves, but has no effect on thieves who are targetting you.

And many insurers still give small discounts for parking on driveways.

re the insurance - apparently it is now the other way around. My husband works in car insurance, and apparently now your insurance will be higher if you park on the drive. This is because you are more likely to damage your car when pulling out of the drive (on gateposts or by reversing into traffic) than for your car to be damaged whilst parked on the road.

Or so he tells me.

Makes sense oakmaiden - but i know I get a discount from my current insurance company for parking on the drive.

Stolen cars are taken from driveways these days not the street, so it would be more of an insurance risk to park there.(keys are nicked from your house first).
