To want the police to do more..

6 weeks ago we had our car broken in to, sat nav, work tools, phone etc all taken. Not nice but we learnt our lesson to not leave valuables in the car. (even if it is parked on our drive Confused )

The week after our house was broken into whilst we were asleep in our beds.. Various items stolen Inc our sons birthday money who had just had his first birthday 3days before, cards and balloons etc still up! All in all about £3k worth of goods taken. Angry

Insurance sorted tho, most things are going to be replaced/recovered but hassle of replacing everything. (my handbag and all it's contents were taken too) has been a nightmare! We have had to pay (not covered on ins) for all locks changed, alarm fitted, new garage door to make home feel safer.

Yesterday we received a letter from local magistrates detailing some one had been caught and charged and fined etc.

Today we get up, 6:15am and the car ( a vw golf btw) has been broken into again!!! Angry Angry

Cue another call to the police and all we get is another bloody crime ref number!!?!

The garage was broken into again?

Sounds like you need increased security.

Alarm
or cctv
or tracking
or big bright lights that come on when someone passes the sensor
something along those lines

You do often find that once you've been burgled, you get burgled again within a fairly short space of time. I have read it's cos you get the insurance or pay yourself to replace stuff and they come back for that too!

or they saw things the first time that they came back for.

or they've marked you as someone who's got lots of stuff and not enough security!

Maybe. I dunno. Just thoughts.

I certainly would advise investing in more security.

Birdsgottafly · 20/05/2011 08:54

What is it that you would like the police to do?

GypsyMoth · 20/05/2011 08:58

i was wondering also, what do you want them to actually do????

supadupapupascupa · 20/05/2011 09:00

was it on the drive again? why don't you use the garage? sounds a bit odd tbh, if they caught the thief am surprised you were done again. did they just catch the house burglar?

we had a massive problem with car crime here at the new year. my car was burnt out! however, the problem went away as quickly as it arrived and it's all nice and safe again.

TheLadyEvenstar · 20/05/2011 09:06

Last week 5 cars in my road were broken into, including ours. Window smashed satnav (hidden in glove compartment) stolen. But here is where it gets unbelievable.

DP is a bus driver and in the boot of the car was his work bag. The theif went through the bag emptied it - including taking DP's wallet out but never took any money from the wallet. They never took amy money from the bus tray, nor the incar dvd players. Just the Satnav and a white rag.

Oddly enough DP was at his car at 4.29 to go to work when he discovered it, he came back up to mine and told me what had happened, he went back down to the car about 10 minutes later and there were police leaning in his car.

The young man who had broken into the cars was in a police car by DP's car. When he had gone out to go to work the police had actually been chasing the perpertrator around the park which is right by where the cars are parked. They caught him and found the bag of satnavs he had just chucked into the bushes.

Police round here are very helpful and efficient. Just wish we knew when we were getting our satnav back could be anything up to 9m.

scurryfunge · 20/05/2011 09:12

What do you want the police to do? Sounds like the burglary was dealt with properly. With regards to the second car break, did anyone attend? Scenes of Crime Officer, for example?

shesparkles · 20/05/2011 09:17

To be fair to the OP, that's pretty shoddy "service" from the police. The force I work for would have at least attended to note statement, carry out door to door and do scenes of crime exam on the vehicle.

However, the level of "service" you've received is indicative of what's to come with the financial cuts imposed by the government, so we'd better all get used to it.

To the OP, please make sure you really up the level of your home security-your force should have someone who can come out and look at your house to see how you can improve your security, as once you've been broken into, you're at much higher risk of it happening again within the next few months as the scumbag druggies sorry, misunderstood cherubs are savvy as to how long it takes to process insurance claims

scurryfunge · 20/05/2011 09:21

You'd get a crime number as soon as you report it -there is nothing to say in the OP, they are not going to attend and do the enquiries.(it was only reported at 6.15am and they have to prioritise).

shesparkles · 20/05/2011 09:21

if they caught the thief am surprised you were done again. did they just catch the house burglar?
In Scotland when someone's caught, they are generally detained until the first available court (usually next day) then generally allowed to go, not necessarily even on bail, until the date where their case will be held.
You and I will never understand the mindset of these criminals, as their minds work totally differently from those of law abiding people. (then again I also don't understand the mindset of the courts when I see the amount of scrotes who are allowed away with a list of pending cases as long as your arm and they're not even on bail)

ElfOnTheTopShelf · 20/05/2011 09:29

I have been broken into twice (home) and the total insurance claims have come to about £9k. The second time we were broken into (three years after the first) they took nearly every electrical item and anything of value, so that worked out expensive.

Neither times was anybody caught. But the police were very good, especially after the second time, they came around with some mini shock alarm things we could stick on our doors and windows which set alarms off if the doors or windows are knocked heavily.

Car has been broken into a few times too - nothing ever taken though, just damage to the locks which we have never claimed for.

stickytoffeepud · 20/05/2011 09:33

sorry but they are too busy taking complaints between the mums of 5 yr olds who are pushing each other at school

or going round telling 13 year olds not to be mean on facebook

or watching out for dogs pooing on the grass

sorry, but there arent infinite resources and if you want them to do all the above, as evidenced on here daily, they will be stretched in other areas

SnuffleTurtle153 · 20/05/2011 10:48

Your initial call would have been taken by a call handler, not an officer. S/he's given you the reference number for the incident and it should then be passed for attention of relevant unit. You should be contacted again and further details taken from you so that a full crime report can be generated, and if there is any forensic potential on the car (i.e. you didn't leave it unlocked, so there's signs of forced entry, a search, the seat has been moved, etc) you ought to be offered attendence by CSI. The call handler should have explained this to you and requested that you preserve the car if appropriate until CSI can get to you. Don't know where you live, but in my area CSI attendence should be same day (though jobs are prioritised, obviously) and you should be contacted by a civilian investigator/officer within 24-48 hours of reporting in order for full details to be taken. If you're unhappy with the response from the call handler call back, give the refernce number and ask what is going to be done. No point getting shirty if it's simply the case that the original person who took the call was maybe new/assumed you knew the routine as you've reported before. I'd call back and just ask what is going to happen next. If you're not happy with the response you're given, that's the time to start getting narky.

ScousyFogarty · 20/05/2011 10:56

yes, we get numbers in my area...the police call the shots. Not the people who report crimes.

SusiaX · 20/05/2011 11:01

We had our car stolen three years ago (broke into house to get keys) and a couple of other items. The police sent someone to check for finger prints (which, of course, there were none) and I think they did a door-to-door as we were away when we got the phone call from our neighbour so we never actually saw a police officer. The only time we ever heard from them again was when they found the car about two months later but by this time the insurance had paid out so it was nothing to do with us anymore. I actually had to ring them to detail what was stolen so that we could make an insurance claim. I found the service was pretty lacking, mainly on the communication front, and it seems if there is no forensic evidence they just take the view that there is nothing they can do.

I assume they didn't find any evidence in the car when they recovered that either but they never informed us either way.

We got security lights and a burglar alarm afterwards.

celebmum · 20/05/2011 16:00

Hi thanks for replies, I've been out to work.

The guy that has been caught is responsible for the original car theft incident. As it stands the house burglary remains unsolved ( SOCO came on the day of break in to lift prints etc, 4unidentified prints were taken and also a pair of gloves that match the prints taken were found about 1/4mile away in a ditch with some items from my handbag.

This morning after reporting the incident Were were not advised of any follow up, wasn't told that anyone would call and when we asked 'what next?' we were told well it's up to you to now contact your insurers again! Hence my original request of wanting a bit more of a response from the local authorities!

With regards the increasing security we have in the last month had all our locks changed, and had an intruder alarm fitted. No attempt has been made on the garage but the door has always been a bit dodgy so we replaced that too.we already have a security light but obviously this has proved itself to be a useless deterrent! And to be honest we cannot actually afford to have anything else done at the mo, weve had all the above to pay for, 2lots of insurance excess and to replace items not covered on ins!
