Was This A Bit Off - School Trip

Was I right to be concerned/glad it wasn't my child? Last night, coming out of checking my rental flats in the city centre, next to a busy road and major junction at 9.30pm. Nearly tripped over 5young children sitting eating chips in the doorway. Navigating past them, I noticed many more children sitting eating their chips along the pavement, some in a pub doorway. I was a bit surprised and when I came back 10 minutes later, said to the adult who seemed to be hovering about with them "Are these children all right? Are you in charge of them?"

She immediately said "Oh no, they're not my children" so I commented that it was a pity they'd been left there to eat their chips in the filth (it is a slightly dirty street as there are a lot of pubs and men urinating occasionally against walls) and she said "Well, its a nightmare trying to look after 35 13 year olds between 3 of us". I said there was a grassy area directly across the road with some seats but she didn't take it in, I don't think.

They were probably waiting for a coach/mini bus to pull up.

Are you sure it was a school trip? At that time of night?

Maybe it was something else. Sounds strange location for a trip.

How young is young?

nijinsky · 18/05/2011 16:20

They were of school age and spoke with an accent which said they weren't local to the area. Its a tourist destination which attracts a lot of school trips, though generally not to that part of town.

Hang on, 13? Big enough to decide where they sit then really, and if it really stank of piss, I'm sure there would have been at least one who would have mentioned it to whoever was in charge!

If it was a school trip they were probably waiting on a bus or something turning up. Quite often in the school I worked at they'd have trips to the theatre or something which would return home really late at night.

When you said young children 'left there to eat their chips in the filth', I had visions of 5 year olds in Oliver Twist style surroundings!

Think you're being a bit precious, tbh. I wouldn't have been bothered.

Teens sat on pavement eating chiPs? Not really that big a deal

Grabaspoon · 18/05/2011 16:30

I thought you meant 8 year olds - sure if something had been wrong with where they were sat then a group of 13 year olds would have said something.
