to expect that unused water be tipped out of the iron after every use?

DP thinks that this is fussing, and makes ironing even more onerous than it need be. My view is that our area is bascially solidified limescale with some houses arranged on top, and that every time water is left sitting in our expensive iron it is forming a deadly crust which will send it to an early grave. He is threatening to get his own separate iron.

"Do people really iron? Really!?"

Yes, because I don't like looking scruffy - I need to look smart for work as well. I also wear a lot of cotton which looks manky unironed IMO. I don't dry clothes in the tumble dryer so they do need ironing. I don't find it a chore because I watch TV when doing it, and OH does his own anyway.

Didyouever · 18/05/2011 17:51

It's got to be about 8 months since I last used the iron so I assume the water has evaporated.

Ironing is a plot from the devil to piss people off.

Never done it. Never considered it. Certsinly never discussed it with anyone on Mn or RL. We have mother of all steam genrated iron thingy aswell.

Tigerbomb · 18/05/2011 18:03

I don't use water, I use vapouresse and it stays in there until it's all gone

lesley33 · 18/05/2011 18:21

I always empty the water out. Hadn't occured to me to do anything else. And I do lots of ironing as well.

lesley33 · 18/05/2011 18:23

I iron for 1 -2 hours every week in front of the tv. It depends what you wear. If you wear nice kinen and cotton blouses/shirts you really have to iron. Although I do iron t-shirts and trousers as well.

redundanttiara · 20/05/2011 17:50

Tigerbomb, what's vapouresse? Posh steam imported from Europe?

maighdlin · 20/05/2011 17:52

buy ironing water and it solves the problem. (and makes your clothes smell nice, you can get in poundland sometimes)

Tigerbomb · 20/05/2011 18:01

Vapouresse is made by Comfort. Its a scented water for Irons. Morrisons own brand is also quite good

Makes your clothes smell lover-ley

Never done this - live in London. My last iron lived for about 9 years. But I don't put much in in the first place so it's usually quite low or empty by the end.

Lonnie · 20/05/2011 18:07

I do nt do this adn I live in a hardwater area

Its my only blinking way of getting a new iron every now and then... (and the blinking thing will NOT break Glarres at it)

BramblyHedge · 20/05/2011 18:13

We have very very very hard water and our ten year old iron is going strong without emptying

belgo · 20/05/2011 18:14

You can buy special water for the iron? I don't even buy special water for myself!
