..To Assume that fitting rooms in shops DONT have surveylance cameras

In conversation with a group of friends, one friend commented that when she needs to change the size of clothing she just swaps it over in the fitting room if the clothes dont have security tags. Another friend said that this would not be possible as surely most shops would have cctv surveylance cameras pointed at their fitting rooms.

I use fitting rooms regularly and was a bit spooked when she said this as I wouldnt want anyone to be seeing me in my rather scruffy underwear!!

Does anyone in retail have any thoughts?

it would make sense that they dont because thats why they have counted amounts you take in and somone at the door

and also wouldm't you have noticed cameras, I haven't

katz · 18/05/2011 07:51

i'd have assumed they did - its going to be the most likely place that someone would try to steal stuff. In fact i'm sure i've seen signs in most changing rooms stating this.

Your friend who does exchanges herself is skating on thin ice - she could find herself accused of stealing. She really should do this through the customer services desk. Equally her actions will screw up the stock taking in that store. I'd personally say she not telling the truth, so few shops now not have security tags.

Wouldn't it be illegal to film people getting undressed? Maybe outside the cubicles.

It's not legal or permissible to have surveillance cameras inside a changing room which is why there are security tags and why you get counted in.

I think your friend is either talking shite or is up to something else - why would you do that when it's so easy to change a garment via customer services? If she's exchanging worn stock with new stock that's no different to and no better than outright theft.

Yes lady that's right. She said that if she'd already bought something that wasn't the right size and there was a massive queue at the checkout she would just go to the changing rooms to swap it over.

I thought it was a bit strange, I'd rather wait in the queue than be caught doing something that was probably illegal.

Having a friend who works in the CCTV industry, I'm told that some fitting rooms have surveillance cameras..... The bigger department stores especially.

HubbaHubbaBubba · 18/05/2011 08:09

She's doing Something Dodgy imho (and not what she's telling you)

VivaLeBeaver · 18/05/2011 08:09

How does she get the security tags off though? Sounds very odd to me.

MardyBra · 18/05/2011 08:11

I've seen signs in Asda saying there are cameras. I am shocked that stores can film you in your undies without warning there are cameras. That's a massive invasion of privacy.

Or the Oyster card Celedon!

sparkle12mar08 · 18/05/2011 08:38

Or the fact that Tesco Clubcard is by far the nations biggest database, bigger than any government one...

alizee · 18/05/2011 08:43

what she's doing is illegal. i work in a major high street chain shop and we don't have cameras IN the fitting rooms. Which is why we do end up with theft, there's not much difference between what your friend does and swapping a nice new garment with some old one from the same brand - so it can't be noticed straight away..

Gingefringe · 18/05/2011 16:01

Yes alizee I suspect that's what she's up to!!

The shop I worked in had them in the public areas (eg entrance/exit/corridors) where people would have to pass through dressed but not focussed on the individual cubicles themselves.
