The secret millionaire

Just watching The Secret Millionaire on Channel 4.
Am I being unreasonable to think the borough of Islington is being a bit misrepresented in this programme???

I live here and my Islington seems like a completely different place to that being presented. Yes, I know there is a lot of poverty, but the same can be said for many parts of London. Just annoying how that woman keeps saying what a horrible place it is compared to where she lives. I love it.

yes they filmed in my area last series and made it look like a right sh1thole, it does have rough parts but they dont show the good bits at all.I have stayed in Islington and it was very nice.

Alambil · 17/05/2011 21:50

it'd be a bit against the idea of the show to show the "alright" parts of an area though.... we all know not the whole of the area is like that, but they need to use the worst bits to inject the money / get the emotional response from the millionaire and the viewers

sailorsgal · 17/05/2011 22:00

They did say that there is some very wealthy families living in the area.

My hometown was on a previous episode but it was actually filmed in a slightly different area.

The whole idea that it is about the people. It doesn't really matter where they live. All parts of London (even Fulham which has places where you can hear gunshots at night) have rough areas. That said, it is incredibly important to show that even in a gentrified area like Islington, poverty and misery happens...

Exactly

Haven't watched the programme but have lived in Islington for 12 years - there is horrendous poverty in many parts of the borough and a huge division between the wealthy and poor. One of the highest unemployment rates, poverty rates, HIV rates, poorest education in London if not the rest of the country. Jeremy Corbyn (MP for Islington North) has talked about housing estates there where kids have never been on the tube or into central London - such are the limited horizons of people's lives there.

It's not all swanky shops on Upper St and lovely restaurants.

many middle class people in london live in a bubble even though they are surrounded (often) by areas of serious deprivation and lawlessness. the cops play a game of containment of these areas and it generally works. but they are still there. you can sip your latte outside a trendy cafe in relative peace. half a mile down the road, its another story. not enough people get out of their little bubbles and see its not all sweetness and light .

jordannarikki · 17/05/2011 22:22

My Dad lived in an alright part of Islington and I though it was a shithole.

Sorry.

Just my opinion an all that but somewhere that's full of yellow signs asking for witnesses to stabbings and feral kids roaming the streets after dark just doesn't scream nice to me.

jordannarikki · 17/05/2011 22:26

Sorry, before I'm quizzed he was living on Liverpool Road - happy to be corrected if that's the shit end of town but I was under the impression it was supposed to be alright round there.

Daydreaming · 17/05/2011 22:34

I actually agree that it is good to show that in areas like Islington there is big divid between the rich and poor, etc.

I just didn't like the fact that the woman seemed to be looking down at Islington !

jordan - there are no stabbings or feral kids around where I live.

That's great daydreaming.

I'm wondering (genuinely) what part you live in.
