to think car hire insurance is a rip-off?

I'm trying to book a rental car from Toulon airport for a week. I decided to go with one company and got almost to the point of booking online when I noticed it did not seem to include third party insurance, and nor was there any option of adding this on. There was only something called Collision Waiver Damage, which seems to only cover the hire car itself.

I've looked around on the net and it sounds like it is common for the car hire company to try to sell you extra insurance when you collect the car, at an extortionate price because you have no choice at this point. Has anyone had this experience? Do you know a way to get round it?

Many thanks for any replies. I have tried posting this in Travel, by the way, but traffic is somewhat slow.

YANBU. There are a couple of companies which specialise in this - I've booked it twice in the last few weeks for under £16 for a week. Details on moneysavingexpert here.

We've just got back from a week's holiday where we booked a car with Hertz. I'd booked it in my name for £100.16 on the web, declining all their extra insurance. When we arrived at the airport, apparently DH was driving Hmm and they've added an extra £89 on to the price for fuel (our own fault for being disorganised but still a bit annoying for a quarter tank) and 40 euro worth of insurance Angry I am seriously uimpressed!

Looks like even AIBU cannot breathe life into a debate on the dull subject of car hire insurance. But thanks for your reply Dita, that site is v. v. useful.
Cheers.

there seems little change in price for insurance for the value of the car
we recently changed from an 11 year car worth £100 to a brand new car worth £11000 both similar in size and engine
and the monthly payment went from £19 to £22!!!!!

You're welcome OP - plus I got to mention on a very busy forum how shite Hertz are, even if no one is reading this thread Grin
