to report this as an assault?

By some twisted irony I have spent a lot of today reading the thread on rape and women's clothing getting fired up about those that somehow think women are at fault if they wear skimpy clothes.

On my way home from work, walking to the station along a main road but also what feels like a fairly remote and dodgy area (I sometimes have to do it when dark in the winter and I do find it a bit worrying) I walked past a group of five 13/14 year olds. I heard them start to walk behind me and giggle and whisper, so I kind of knew that they would doing something, i.e. they were going to shout something at me.

What actually happened was one of them came up behind me (I thought he was going to take my bag) booted me in the bum (enough for me to have a bruise).

I spun round and he was running away and in my rage I shouted 'you stupid fucking little prick, fucking run away!' and probably other choice words Blush

His friends were still there giggling so I shouted some more at them, then got my phone out and DP was calling and they all ran after their friend.

DP was obviously livid so I've come home and called the police. Not sure was the protocol normally is, he said do I want a policeman to come round, and I said I just thought I should report it in case they are known troublemakers and perhaps the police could give them a talking to - his response was 'well it's hard to say in these situations, you could make it worse for yourself if you see them again'...but he did proceed to take the full report down and said someone will call back.

I have to walk this route every day, and I don't want to live in fear of being kicked by some little shits. I'm guessing they do live in the areas (lots of housing) so conceivably I could see them again.

Have I overreacted or should I be pursuing this as assault?

Hurts to sit down now :(

I have so much sympathy for you. Do everything in your power to make sure these fuckwits know this NOT okay, before they go on to do worse. Good on you for being angry and not just leaving it - you sound very strong.

how have the police acted shitly?

how can they "look for them" if they dont know anything about who "them" might be. i wish i could utilise my powers of telepathy but alas....no. they fail me. what i need if someone reports an assault is some hard evidence, as that is what our judicial system tends to rely on. saying it was a group of kids means - it could be any group of kids.
they will pass this to the neighbour hood police i have no doubt. but without hard evidence - ie a name, a line of enquiry, witnesses or something like CCTV how exactly are the police meant to act? they will be passing this on, and acting behind the scenes. our force has a policy where nothing can be filed until the complainant is spoken to about it.
it is an assault. (it will be classed as common assault - not as some poster said - ABH) it definitely warranted reporting, but expectations have to be realistic. are the police meant to go and lock up every boy child who is the right age? what are they supposed to do without any lines of enquiry?

actually ive decided to hide any thread with police in the title as of now.

kangers · 15/05/2011 23:03

Sounds like it may be something that was filmed? Sorry about the idea of that but may be evidence. Perhaps search youtube with street name, description- isn't it called 'happyslapping'. But may not have been. I would have absolutely lost it and probably got done fo assault myself (but depends on size and number of kids). Little twats.

ThatVikRinA22 · 15/05/2011 23:07

i agree that they absolutely need dealing with, but they have to be found first. give the police as much info as you can, and dont write them off before you know what they have done/are going to do/ to investigate.

tired and off to bed, and have decided to hide all police related threads before i blow a gasket....

hope you get a result op, good luck with it.

rey · 15/05/2011 23:09

definately done the right thing and hopefully as one poster has already said, it could save some other person from suffering.
Do hope the police take it seriously. Thinking even further ahead, if it has happened before or if it happens again and the person also goes ahead and tells the police then you will have done lots of people a really big favour.

izzywhizzyletsgetbusy · 16/05/2011 02:44

You've done absolutely the right thing, and if a bruise appears take date stamped pix and also get your injury logged with your GP.

LittlePickleHead · 16/05/2011 08:18

Vicar sorry this thread has pissed you off!

The police are calling me back, but yes I do agree it will be hard to find them. I would be happy with an increased patrol, I just want to feel safe.

It's a busy main road so there could have been CCTV, the man did say that they would look into it.

On the plus side, bum feels a bit better today! Grin

I thought the police acting shitly thing was because the OP was basically advised not to make a formal complaint in case of repurcussions?

I would be a bit naffed off if the police said that to me too TBH.

OP you did the right thing Smile

LittlePickleHead · 16/05/2011 08:39

Sardine may have been misleading - he did not say not to make a formal complaint (there is def going to be a report), he said he didn't know if it would be a good idea for the police to give them a 'ticking off' as it might make them worse if I saw them again.

But I don't think (as someone mentioned above) that he was an actual police officer, so don't know how much credence to give his opinion. I'll wait and see what the police say when they contact me.

Fair enough! I was just trying to say that I could see where custardo was coming from if that was the message they gave you. Rather than the idea that people on the thread are just randomly slagging the police off IYSWIM.
