To have called the police?

I have name changed for this just in case.

This morning at 4.00 am I was woken by my upstairs neighbour having an extremely noisy party, this went on till 9.00 am. I have flu and feel like utter crap. At around 10.00 am someone started throwing stones at my window, I went and pulled the window up it was someone trying to get the attention of my upstairs neighbour and get into her property. I told him to stop it immediately and left it at that. About twenty minutes later I walk into my living room to find this individual standing on my exterior window sill I AM ON THE FIRST FLOOR!!!!! trying once more to gain access to her property.

I called the police immediately and they questioned him AND HIS THREE MATES WHO HAD TURNED UP AND WERE LOITERING AROUND IN MY GARDEN ALSO TRYING TO GAIN ACCESS TO THE PROPERTY!!!!

Anyway told my friend about this and they said "well if you knew he was just trying to get back to the party, why didn't you just tell him to get down, bit strong to call the police".

Firstly I didnt know he was trying to get back to the party as it appeared to be over, no noise or music, quite frankly I didnt know him from Adam and isnt it a bit odd to be trying to gain access to a second floor flat when that person is not letting you in by scaling the front of the building, like friggin spiderman? The police arrived and caught them now round the SIDE of the building trying to gain access that way.

So AIBU?

I would have called the police as well! It sounds like they didn't get that the party was over.

AgentZigzag · 15/05/2011 13:45

YWNBU at all, it's only now that you know everything turned out alright, but you didn't know that when the bloke was standing outside your window.

Most probably just high jinx on their behalf, but they just went too far.

Hope they're all suffering with hangovers for you today Smile

IprivateI · 15/05/2011 13:46

No. Uncivilised little shits.

ShimmeryPixie · 15/05/2011 13:47

Definitely would've called the police.

TheFarSide · 15/05/2011 13:47

You did the right thing. It's quite scary for someone to go to such lengths to get into a party. If your windows had been opened, they might have gone through your flat then let themselves out through to the upstairs flat.

ScaredyDog · 15/05/2011 13:48

YANBU.

SenoritaViva · 15/05/2011 13:56

YANBU, do you remember that awful story of a man setting a building on fire due to not coming to a party. Some people died, i think they were jockeys or related to the horse world. It was utterly horrible. How are you to know whether they are friends who have left a jacket behind or someone your neighbour actually wanted nothing to do with. YANBU (again for good measure)

elphabadefiesgravity · 15/05/2011 14:00

YANBU you were not to know. You found a stranger on your property, throwing stones etc.

Anti social behaviour should absolutely be reported.

Hope you feel better soon.

worraliberty · 15/05/2011 14:00

Your mate sounds like a fruitcake. Is she 'anti police' or something?

lazarusb · 15/05/2011 14:51

They are lucky it wasn't me - I would have opened the window and poked them with a broom handle until they fell off Grin Calling the Police was entirely reasonable, I'm sure most people would.

Avantia · 15/05/2011 14:59

I would have called the police at 4am ! ( or council as it is dealt with now to deal with noise )

YANBU

yummybutterbiscuit · 15/05/2011 15:21

I agree with Avantia, I would have (and have before when neighbours had a party that went on till 5am) phoned the police when the party was that loud that late.

psiloveyou · 15/05/2011 18:37

I would have opened the window and pushed him off. Cheeky little git.
YWNBU.

Vallhala · 15/05/2011 18:41

Would have thrown a bucket of water at him the first time I encountered him. That way he wouldn't have dared give it a second try by doing a Spiderman impersonation.

theglove · 15/05/2011 18:56

Blimey, so many neighbour threads at the moment and each one sounds a nightmare.

Maybe it's the sun bringing the nightmare neighbours out. I know at our last house we felt beseiged at the start of every summer, even though by comparison, they were quite nice neighbours.

BTW, I think you handled it very well and were definitely not unreasonable.

unfitmother · 15/05/2011 19:01

YANBU

dugsinthestow · 15/05/2011 19:09

I totally agree with you - I would have called the Police. For all you knew, they could have been trying to break in somewhere not just getting to the party!

CurrySpice · 15/05/2011 19:10

I would have been totally freaked out by seeing a man on my windowsill! Shock so YANBU

JeremyKylesPetProject · 15/05/2011 19:14

YANBU.

I'd have shoved him off and called an ambulance. (Would your friend find that unreasonable?)

outragedneighbour · 15/05/2011 20:22

Sorry to take so long to get back to this. Ds now coming down with my flu and very unhappy Sad.

Well glad to see I did the right thing. I was pretty sure of it anyway.

I was freaked out, stood there like Shock this for about a minute and then started scrabbling round for my phone to call the police.

Really liking the bucket of water idea I have to say Grin, maybe should have one stood ready by the window for next time.

We have a thing called the noise pollution team here and while they are pretty effective, the do take flipping ages to come out so you are just basically waiting, getting more and more stressed out for them to come, its almost more trouble than its worth. I do wish we were back in the days when you could just call the police and they would come out and break up the party.
