to ask how often you report threads?

Do to another spurt of "ooooooooh you horrible nest of vipers, why can't you be fluffier?" threads, I have been considering how often I report and why.

I don't often, and have only really reported sneaky advertising threads or ones where personal info has been given out in error. I can only think of one occasion where I have done it because someone has been awful.

I love that Mumsnet is self moderated and think it's done well, but does any one else get that "tattletale" feeling when they do report Grin, and what is the etiquette. I tend to just report, but I noticed others post that they are reporting and why, which is best?

Or just tell me to bugger off and do something constructive Wink

OP posts:
Psammead · 11/05/2011 13:04

I have reported about half a dozen times since I have been here, I think. Personal attacks, trolling/troll hunting threads, obvious threads just started for flaming purposes etc.

Usually I say that I have reported.

Psammead · 11/05/2011 13:07

I post that I have reported because I don't mind the person in question knowing it was me, and why I reported them. I prefer to confront them IYSWIM.

Have also reported threads which have got totally out of control, not specific posts, but just to draw MN's attention to it.

Morloth · 11/05/2011 13:08

Never have, just don't care that much.

I get a bit 'eyerolly' when people report stuff but don't really give a damn about that either.

wordsonascreen · 11/05/2011 13:08

I blame MN for my RSI.

DingDongMerrilyOutOfSeason · 11/05/2011 13:09

I was just thinking this! Some people post when they are not aware of the implications of their post and in these cases more experienced members will advise them to report their own post which is nicer than being reported.

I have reported one, an advertising one. I said that I thought it was advertising without admitting it and asked for it to be moved to somewhere more suitable. I told the OP I had done it. I got (internet version of) shouted at. It was moved as she was trying to advertise something.

I have not reported any for trolling or personal attacks because I normally get there too late!

Only ever advertising I think.

ChaosTrulyReigns · 11/05/2011 13:27

May I ask what MRA is?

And I have reported cheeky feckers advertising.

I seem to remember one recently where the OP definitely needed reporting. There's some nasty pieces of work out there.

ZZZenAgain · 11/05/2011 13:28

I reported one for advertising once. Tbh it doesn't sit right with me toreport threads.

TrillianAstra · 11/05/2011 13:29

As often as I see something that I think deserves reporting.

Mostly advertising threads, or threds where somoene has an idea about the site and says 'how do we tell MNHQ?'

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 11/05/2011 13:29

I've reported advertising / spamming

AlpinePony · 11/05/2011 13:30

Nope, really don't see the point of reporting - we're not at school.

I've been reported many, many times - and the only time it really "grated" was when the person said "that was very funny but I'm going to report you anyway because not everyone will get it". Wtf? Dumbing down.

KurriKurri · 11/05/2011 13:32

We get a few on the breast cancer thread, usually saying 'forget chemo, you can cure your cancer by gobbling a few herbal extractions which I happen to sell on my website' - I report those feckers.

There a few other repetitive health scaremongers who constantly post bollocks which can frighten people, but if they're not advertising there's not much you can do - I've tried reporting them, but been told to just argue with them. Fair enough I guess.

Nancy66 · 11/05/2011 13:33

I reported loads on the Madeleine McCann thread - because they contained nasty, unsubstantiated rubbish - and also because I knew it would really piss off the person who posted them.

Mostly I don't report

BitOfFun · 11/05/2011 13:36

I report as and when...it does feel a bit prefectish, but I think that's preferable to leaving something unnecessarily upsetting up. This is supposed to be supportive/entertaining, afterall.

NerfHerder · 11/05/2011 13:37

I have been wondering this myself recently.

I don't tend to report threads for behaviour, just individual posts, and rarely tbh. If you post and call someone on their behaviour, frequently they apologise I have found. Better to sort it out between ourselves than call in a referee I think Wink

I report a lot of advertising/market research threads.

Maybe MNHQ could give us an indication of how many threads are reported daily (or weekly) and how many are removed, and how many are advertising/market research/spam type activities?

reports thread>>

Honeydragon · 11/05/2011 13:38

Good point Kurri, I lurked on the BC site a lot a couple of years ago for advice to support my mum, I was horrified at people using it to flog "cures", I saw it on other sites too.

So nobody has reported loads have they? Which shows that mostly people do behave and get their views across without rule breaking.

OP posts:
ZZZenAgain · 11/05/2011 13:41

don't think I have ever reported a post (other than my own if I wanted to ask to have it deleted, I don't know another way of doing that).

Someone told me she was going to report a post of mine once but I never heard anything about it and it wasn't deleted so I don't know. Some poeple do report quite a bit I think - on contentious threads where it could bring a legal suit on MN for instance whihc is maybe sensible reporting IYSWIM

It feels like denouncing to me and I hate the idea of it but I realise people have sensible reasons for it usually. I don't find MN over-policed really, do you OP?

TandB · 11/05/2011 13:42

I have only ever reported one post and that was a nasty, persistent personal attack on the parenting skills of someone who happened to disagree with a notorious cowbag trouble-maker. The other poster was clearly extremely upset.

My general stance is that the majority of MNers are decent people with sufficient intelligence and grace to pull people up on inappropriate comments, and that it is probably better for a shocking comment to stand so that everyone can see that poster for what they are.

giyadas · 11/05/2011 13:46

I've reported some trolls on the feminism board, it's the only way to stop them being overrun.

Chaos - MRA is a mens rights activist. a.k.a. bitter, twisted women-hating venom spewers.

LaWeasel · 11/05/2011 13:55

I have reported: A huge number of advertising posts (all 100% successful all natural cures Hmm).
One for too many details about another poster, iyswim.
One for personal attack, which was then deleted for troll hunting. Confused No idea what that was supposed to mean, tbh.

I've never reported anyone for saying something bad to me. I suppose I would if they said something terrible enough, but I'm not involved in that many rows I don't think...

ChaosTrulyReigns · 11/05/2011 14:04

Oh I reported one of my own when I was in texting mode and signed off with my RL name like a doily.

Which wouldn't be too bad - but i have a very unusual and therefore identifiable name.

Blush
ChaosTrulyReigns · 11/05/2011 14:05

Thanks giyadas.

I've not heard that before.
