To not pay for my wedding video?

I got married in april last year; seven weeks before the wedding i went to a wedding fair and ented a draw for a free wedding dvd. I was a bit dubious when i was contacted a few days later to be told i'd won it, but checked nicely that there wasn't a catch, and was very grateful when it seemed to be genuine.

Two people attended on the day to film it, spent about 12 hours there filming the whole thing, were really nice and friendly. At the evening reception I thanked them again and explained I would be very happy to pay them some money (their expenses and 100 quid token of gratitude, something like that), but didn't have any cash on me, but would send them a cheque in due course.

We have only just got the dvd, there's been quite a bit of worry and phone calls to them over the last year trying to ensure we'd receive it. I would still like to pay them but my husband thinks I'm mad. Is he BU?

Wow I thought that therev was going to be a catch like "free wedding DVD but you have to pay for the filming and the man hours etc".

You obviously do not have to pay them anything but it would be very nice if you did. They have given you an excellent wedding present.

You won the prize draw, you shouldn't have to pay anything.
Your initial gesture to pay expenses/tip was generous and a nice thing to do. However, they have made you wait over a year for your DVD. I think that negates any tip you were once willing to pay. I'm with your DH on this on, especially as you have had hassle and worry to actually receive it.

FrozenChocolate · 11/05/2011 10:51

But you won it! If they wanted paying they should not have offered it as a prize. And you waited over a year to get it. I would not pay.

NeverSayPie · 11/05/2011 10:51

It took over a year? Fuck paying them anything.

HRHPrincessZombiePlan · 11/05/2011 10:51

NO your hsband is not BU. You won the dvd fair and square - if they weren#t happy doing it for free they wouldn't have offered it as a prize in the first place. They then pissed you around for over a year and you basically want to tip them? Are you mad?!

NewbieT · 11/05/2011 11:17

MrSpoc, that's what I thought, or maybe that they wanted some footage to use for advertising on their website, but at any rate was more than happy to give them something.

I just feel a bit guilty, they must have spent a fortune on the stall at the wedding fair, then this backfired on them, maybe the business failed in the meantime so they were no longer motivated to get it done?

I know i probably sound like a bleeding heart soft touch though Blush

Had you received fantastic service from them then yes, give them something. But a year to wait for the video and having to chase it is not fantastic service so no, I wouldn't.

squeakytoy · 11/05/2011 11:48

How did it "backfire on them"? You won it fairly. I wouldnt pay anything.

FurKnickersAndNoCoat · 11/05/2011 11:50

No way would I pay them anything. Firstly it was a prize that you won fair and square and secondly you have then had to wait for a year to receive it. Im with your H - it's crazy to pay them anything.

GloriaSmut · 11/05/2011 11:52

You owe them nothing. They willingly put their services into a free draw - almost certainly in the hope of getting further business - and you won that draw. If they couldn't afford to give their business away then they shouldn't have done so!

BelieveInPink · 11/05/2011 11:52

Arrgh, I can see why you shouldn't pay but I'd be the same as you. What is the DVD like, quality wise? If it was thrown together and a shoddy piece of work then I would give them sweet FA but if it was a wonderful DVD and they've spent time and effort on it then I would be tempted to still send them a token. A small token though. They did take over a year to send it to you, the bastards. :o

GloriaSmut · 11/05/2011 11:54

PS. It's not as if you've had very good service either is it? The video might be OK and their attention on the day sounds fine but it is hardly reasonable to keep you waiting for a year. Although that's almost certainly the price you've paid for getting something free.

luvvinlife · 11/05/2011 11:55

Waiting a year for the video !

Sod giving them a tip. Even though it was free I'd demand compensation for emotional stress.

aldiwhore · 11/05/2011 11:56

If it was a prize then you shouldn't pay OR complain that its taken them a year to send it to you. If you'd already paid them the highly generous £100 odd than they would have probably got the DVD to you more quickly. Seeing as you haven't paid them and they've taken so long, I'd forget any notion of paying anything. So I'm with your husband on this.

The company have probably prioritised paying clients over you, which is fair enough. So its fair enough not to pay them anything. They've taken a year to produce the goods, you've taken a year to get that cheque to them. Seems like you've struck a balance!
