DD has started a near obsessionalcollection of Build-a-Bear teddies and clothes(how many clothes does a pesky bear need??) She uses her pocket money so fair enough. Also has bed and wardrobe bought with present. Now she wants the Build-a Bear wheelchair!! WTF?? AIBU to feel a bit queasy at the thought of a wheelchair as a toy.I've told her for some children, even some in her school,a w/chair is not a toy and they would dearly wish to not use them.Apart from the eye-bleeding price is it any worse than a 'lets pretend to be a doctors playset'?

We bought it for DS's bear when he (DS) was in hospital, he loved it Grin

I think it is a good accessory. There are lots of children in wheelchairs and while not being a toy, having a toy that reflects the person you are is something children do appreciate.

NerfHerder · 10/05/2011 20:48

Do you object to spectacles as playthings too? Or buggies?
YABU, and quite possibly disablist.

hanaka88 · 10/05/2011 20:50

Why not? The bears walk and they are toys, what's wrong with a toy in a wheelchair... TBH it will just teach acceptance.

Disclaimer my son needs a SN buggy.

NurseSunshine · 10/05/2011 20:51

Perhaps she wants one because some children in her school use wheelchairs?

Sirzy · 10/05/2011 20:52

YABU.

Nothing wrong with it, lots of people are in wheelchairs and its nice to see a toy that reflects that and normalises it.

If there are children in your DDs school then it is probably normal to her to want a wheelchair for her teddy like x has, in the same way she may want a dress for it like y has.

Wheelchairs are tools that enable people to get around more easily, just like a pushchair, scooter or bicycle. Nothing wrong with it.

OTOH, you must be giving your dd a LOT of pocket money if she can afford to buy a collection of build a bears and clothes from her pocket money. My dds got vouchers from their grandparents, bought two bears and three outfits and it came to nearly £90.

Ouch I'm being slated here but I did ask. I'm not disablist in any way, shape or form,I work in NHS health so alot of my patients are in wheelchairs so I am painfully aware they rely on them for mobility. That's why I don't see them as a toy.I also wear glasses myself so same there.Unlike scooters/bikes there is often not a choice- thats me on my soapbox.
WRT her pocket money she gets £5 so she saves up and if its her money she'll look after them ( or Christmas money etc).I said I'd be guided by MN so may go ahead.
