to think that the Disney Faces competition is likely to go pearshaped

here

Not sure I like the idea of a beautiful baby competition. And this is pitting MNetters each other. Can only end in tears and flounces.

Can we have a ban on "Please vote for my baby" threads please? Or is there one already in place?

Dissuade advertisers from what type of activity?

JustineMumsnet · 12/05/2011 00:43

this type of activity

TrillianAstra · 12/05/2011 00:45

So you want to dissuade advertisers from something that you have just done?

Well that's not very consistent.

JustineMumsnet · 12/05/2011 00:47

We've always suggested to advertisers there are better ways of interacting with a MN audience - sometimes they don't agree. Am saying perhaps we should try a bit harder to convince them. Can't see the inconsistency in that?

TrillianAstra · 12/05/2011 00:51

Makes a lot of sense.

I like it a lot actually.

Go along with what the advertisers say they want to do, let the threads arise entirely organically, then say "Well we did warn you that MNers don't tend tolike that sort of thing"

:o

Now envisioning Justine et al in detention

I must try harder to dissuade advertisers from inane competitions

I may be being thick, but I don't see the problem.

If you are the sort of person who likes baby competitions, and you have a baby - enter. If you like them and you want to vote - vote, if you don't like them, don't enter and don't vote.

some people love them. And if they do and they enter, or they vote - that's their choice.

And if someone flounces because their baby didn't win - then that means nothing other than they are the sort of person who throws a tantrum if their baby doesn't win a competition. and that's their problem and they need to grow up.

MmeLindt · 12/05/2011 08:45

True, Hecate. I just don't like these kind of competitions - they are not about which baby is cutest, or which caption is wittiest.

It is all about the social media presence of the parents, and how many people they get to vote for their photo.

My favourite comps are those where you enter and a name gets picked at random.

OP posts:
HecateQueenOfTheNight · 12/05/2011 08:54

You're right.

I personally hate the things. They are always about who gets the most mates to vote. Which to me seems pointless. If you win, you know that you won not because your baby WAS the cutest, but because you rallied enough friends to make sure they won.

So you can't say "my baby won a beautiful baby competition" you can only say "I have got loads of friends"

Any 'victory' is worthless.

But to those people, it doesn't matter that they haven't actually won anything worth a damn. They technically won and they can say they won.

Personally, I think there's nothing to be proud or pleased about in that at all. winning for winning's sake. I mean, do they look at their baby and think that their baby won? It's all about Show.

But that's their choice. If they want to carry on like that, let them. Don't try to save them from themselves. Grin that's not up to any of us.

  • oh, and in my young and stupid new parent days Grin I was approached in the shopping centre and asked if I wanted to enter my baby in a comp. run by local paper. advertised in paper and telephone votes. I said yes Blush and he was photographed.

You could keep track of the votes Hmm and I watched 2 normal looking plain and ordinary babies keep overtaking each other. I realised what they were doing and kept checking. and every time, the one had overtaken the other. Silly people.

and my lad got second place in the end anyway! without my asking anyone to vote! So as far as I'm concerned. He won. Grin

And I can't believe I confessed that I used to be the sort of person who would parade her baby Blush

MmeLindt · 12/05/2011 09:09

Hecate!

Please tell me you didn't make him wear a tux.

Or put gel in his hair.

HecateQueenOfTheNight · 12/05/2011 09:16

he was only 3 months old. They grabbed me in the shopping centre and photographed him right there and then.

He had on bright yellow dungarees that had a little bit of sick on them. Blush

His prize was a massive picture on canvas of that same photo.

HecateQueenOfTheNight · 12/05/2011 09:17

In my defence, though, they started the conversation with "your baby is really beautiful"

I would probably have given them my bank account details if they'd started asking by saying that Grin

MmeLindt · 12/05/2011 09:56

:o

Ha. When my DC were that age, I would have signed up too. I even did the Boots photo thing where you get one photo for next to nothing and the others are extortionately expensive.

Eeek, I just clicked the linked and now voted, but am feeling a little bit emotional at having to pick when all the babies are actually really cute. I hate the thought of the rest not winning, will the parents feel sad and rejected? (in my defence I have had 5 hours sleep and might cry at any minute anyway!)

I picked the twins in the end! I figured their parents need all the help they can get! (In a nice way, not that they are ugly or poverty stricken or anything, but I'm sure twins are hard work and the parents could do with a pick-me-up )

DorisDoesntDance · 12/05/2011 13:14

oh bravo disney... bucketloads of publicity for them, plus free models for their range. bloody hate crap like this.
