Ds ( 13yrs ) has just been bitten on the nose by an unvaccinated Dog , He has a few spots (acne) around his nose and its looks like the dogs tooth hit off one of these spots . Would he still need a Tetanus Vaccination ?
The boy(traveller ) that owns the dog has confirmed the dog is not Vaccinated

a&e i would have thought, did it draw blood?

CFAW · 10/05/2011 17:34

Yes he needs a tetanus, vaccinated or not

HerHissyness · 10/05/2011 17:35

A&E, tetanus. now.

gkys · 10/05/2011 17:36

i would go to a&e for any animal bite, they will sort out any imms needed.

hope all good, why does it matter that the dogs owner was a traveller though?

whatliesbeneath · 10/05/2011 17:36

NO not really - A tiny tiny bit of blood from where the spot burst iykwim no puncture marks though

BuntyPenfold · 10/05/2011 17:37

A & E, tetanus.

Waltons · 10/05/2011 17:37

He will need anti-biotics as well. Dog saliva is full of nasties.

A & E, don't muck about posting here!

tallulahxhunny · 10/05/2011 17:38

i personally wouldnt bother, it sounds like its just the spot thats been hit but its up to you really

BuntyPenfold · 10/05/2011 17:39

Lots of farmer's dogs are never vaccinated but I thought that only increases the risk of illness to the dog, not the person bitten.
I think any risk to your son is very low but I still wouldn't take that risk.

ddubsgirl · 10/05/2011 17:40

the spot could get infected,a&e just to get it checked.

Sidge · 10/05/2011 17:40

If your DS is due his school leavers booster then he can have that now and it will also update his tetanus.

The risk of infection from a dog's saliva is greater than the risk of tetanus so he may need antibiotics.

You could go to your GP, A&E, a Minor Injuries Unit or a Walk In Centre depending on your local provision.

ddubsgirl · 10/05/2011 17:40

bunty i dont think its her son, hench why she said he is a traveller

BuntyPenfold · 10/05/2011 17:43

Confused I thought the OP's son was bitten by a traveller's dog?

thefirstMrsDeVere · 10/05/2011 17:44

Are you in the UK?

If so vacs are for the dog not the humans around them. They are vacc'd against parvo, leptospirosis and a couple of other things.

Phone NHS direct and ask them, may save you a trip to A&E. If your son is up to date with his tetenus they may tell you not to worry.

They dont always give anti bs for dog bites. It would depend on how deep the wound was.

loiner45 · 10/05/2011 17:46

Wash it, apply surgical spirit, keep an eye on it and don't panic. I've lost count of the number of times my kids have got scratched by cats and dogs over the years (teeth & claws - always the kids fault!) and we've never had a single nasty infection - just be sensible. It sounds a really minor injury! Vaccination protects the dog btw, not people:-)

ddubsgirl · 10/05/2011 17:52

sorry bunty you was right i read it wrong, sorry yes it was her ds.

whatliesbeneath · 10/05/2011 17:53

I have phoned my GP but the secretary said he has left the surgery for the evening , So i have been given the name and number of a emergency doctor that i can phone at 6pm .

whatliesbeneath · 10/05/2011 17:58

Sorry it does not matter that the dogs owner is a traveller , not sure why i put that in my op Blush .

mummytime · 10/05/2011 18:07

Go to A and E. But also be glad it was a dog and not a person, as you get worse infections from human bites (a useless piece of information).

whatliesbeneath · 10/05/2011 19:27

Just back .

We were given an appointment to a health center to see a doctor there , ds did not need a tetanus thankfully as the doctor explained this is covered in the booster jabs that he would have gotten when he was 5yrs old (in Ireland)

We were given a prescription for an antibiotic just to be on the safe side Smile

Thank you for all your help .

Wouldn't it have been quicker to ring NHS direct first, rather than posting here for a 'quick response please'? I don't understand some people.

LoopyLoopsBettyBoops · 10/05/2011 19:54

No, Bing. A) She's in Ireland, B) NHS Direct take hours even in an emergency.

whatliesbeneath · 10/05/2011 20:02

bing I posted here while i was waiting for the out of hours doctor
to start up.
I'm in Ireland and over here we would have been waiting hours if we had of
gone to A&E.

He needs antibiotics and tetanus. It doesn't matter whether the dog is unvaccinated or not.
