Just to add, i think that those in the government are so far removed from ordinary society they cannot begin to understand. There should be more imput from other sources towards policy making. The publics opinions should also always not come into it (remove justice being seen to be done and have it done in a way that really benefits society).

Yes, Birds I am sympathetic to a lot of what you say. The public think prison is "cushy" It could never be that. I suppose victorian prisons vary from someothers.

Years ago, I went to wandsworth for a job interview. The prison had an awful feel to it. But a trusty in carpet slippers gave me tea.

When I went to Wandsworth Prison for the interview; my sense of direction is not very good.

Trying to leave the prison I was walking inside wondering where the gate was
and a posh voice shouted: " Hello, are you looking for the way out?"

I had managed to miss a 30 ft gate. it was a bit like a Carry On film. But I was glad to get out.
