Hi so we were having our daily walk around the massive field, my dog can get a bit arsey with other dogs but has never bitten one, so whenever we see another coming I always put her on the lead, usually the other dog walker puts their dog on the lead or distracts their dog. If not I tend to hold my dog close and stand at the edge of a wide path whilst they go by. Today two rodehsion ridgebacks come bounding up sniffing round and not moving away- my dog is unhappy - but I have her close by my side, I shouted to the woman to ask her to get her dogs under control as all dogs getting a bit snarly by this point. She said her dogs were under control and said it was a free field and I should walk on the cycle track if I was unhappy- I said why ? as thats where the bikes go!
Also I did think two huge dogs running towards anyone could be a bit scary? Was I BUI to ask her to get her dogs away ?

yanbu

If you were just asking her to put her dogs on lead just to pass yours, and not for the whole of their walk, YANBU

Under control with a dog means your dog is not doing anything you do not want it to do. I assume this woman would not want her dogs to bother other people so if they were bothering you, they weren't under control. You were not being unreasonable.

She was being a tit

Honeydragon · 10/05/2011 11:24

Her dogs were NOT under control, yours was. UANBU.

She shouldn't have allowed her dogs to run over to another dog which was on a lead, it is very bad manners best.

However, people do not always have full control of their dogs and although your dog hasn't yet bitten one, it is possible that a situation may occur where a bite does happen and it could lead to problems for you or your dog (if your dog is on a lead and a fight starts, you may well get bitten) and for that reason I think it is sensible to walk your dog in areas where other dogs are unlikely to be off lead and in the meantime seek help to address his behaviour. It's perfectly possible your actions of keeping him close on a lead when other dogs approach is making him worse.

people are barmy about their dogs.

she thinks hers are perfect.

YANBU at all - this sort of thing drives me nuts. And she was simply wrong - her dogs were not under control, they were making you and your dog uncomfortable.

Yanbu. This really annoys me too. Some people think they have a god-given right to let their dogs run around wherever and don't understand why some people might not like it. I always put my dog on her lead when we go past people, whether they have a dog or not, as some people don't like dogs coming up to them.
