Sorry to post this here - I want quick advice (and possibly a shake) and I know this board gets more traffice.

My 5 year old has been invited over to another friends house for tea, going from school tomorrow. I know the family - they're lovely. Their little girl travels to and from school on a bus, picked up and returned to almost their front door, Mum there waiting each time.

Their little girl has done this journey since starting at 4 years, so well used to it, but mine hasn't (me and since my return to Uni, my parents take her and collect her). Am I being a bit precious not wanting her to go on the school bus? Is this just first time nerves? What would you do?

I can't pick her up (working), my folks are having to attend to something else for a change and the Mum who invited her doesn't drive.

Is it a public bus? Or a school bus?

This would make all the difference for me.

DoMeDon · 10/05/2011 10:12

School bus, maybe. Public bus, NO WAY!

What the others said. No problem if it's a school bus.

Loonytoonie · 10/05/2011 10:18

Oops sorry - yes, a school bus.
And the first time nerves are more mine Blush Grin

Personally I wouldn't. It's not ideal is it?

GooGooMuck · 10/05/2011 10:26

whats the issue if it is a school bus? i would do it. But, is your child allowed on the bus? Confused

Loonytoonie · 10/05/2011 10:28

Ah - had not thought about whether the school bus allows it.....

The issue for me about the school bus would be that DD has not done it before, will the driver know to pick her up/drop her off, will they let her on the bus. If all those had acceptable answers I would be happy for it to happen.

DeWe · 10/05/2011 10:29

If your 5yo is happy to then let them. It'll be an adventure to them.
If you're really worried then go to school and watch them get on the bus together.

Loonytoonie · 10/05/2011 10:35

disgustedperson what's your thought's on not allowing? am interested.

I'm going to speak to the Mum and ask her about the bus company - perhaps they wouldn't even allow her on without prior consent (hadn't even considered things like their insurance til now)?

Going to watch her get on and off would be ideal, but I can't get out of work.

I think it would be fine, since the other girl is well used to it.

FabbyChic · 10/05/2011 10:43

Surely when she was invited you would have spoken about how she was going to get there? I know I would have.

ShatnersBassoon · 10/05/2011 10:43

I would be happy for them to go on a school bus, but would make sure the driver knows exactly what the plan is; "There will be an extra child on the bus home, the extra child looks like this, and will be getting off at the same place as this child..."

Perhaps one of the classroom assistants would be happy to make sure your daughter gets on the bus and that the driver is certain about who she's with and so on.

TidyDancer · 10/05/2011 10:45

I have a five-year-old (trying to think what i would allow!).

Yes, I think I would probably let him go.

cantspel · 10/05/2011 10:48

my sons used to get the school bus at that age without any problems. The bus company will be on contract to do the school runs and have drivers who have been thought all the relevant checks.
But if you dont have a place allocated on the bus then there might be a problem with them being allowed on. Ours would only carry children who had be allocated a place.

Loonytoonie · 10/05/2011 10:57

FabbyChic - I received a text late last night and only saw it once I got to work, so have had no real time to discuss it. Have tried calling the Mum during my break, but no answer.

Thanks everyone - I need to find out about the bus, then I'll decide. Sheesh - all this for tea with a friend!
