in Germany children write regular tests with grades from 1to 6being given from about the age of eight -and by regular I mean 8 per subject (maths and german at least). They know that the grades will determine which type of school they will be allowed to enter aged ten. While I think the German education system is far from ideal I think that some on here are a bit too precious assessments in schools.aibu?

The issue for me is not the SATs themselves, but the use they are put to - to rank schools in simplistic league tables, which means that they become the be all and end all to the school and time is taken out of children's learning as a result.

Agree Bramshott. This 11+ grammar school social mobility is a bit of a myth, most kids who go are middle class. (I and dd both went, so not sour grapes). It is a fact that comprehensive schools were brought in by Conservative councils, disappointed that their kids didn't pass 11+ and got dumped in the sink sec. mods.
