A violent 18rated playstation game.
For a 11yr old boy? Reasonable or no?

Do you need to ask really - its an 18 rated game which suggests its not really suitable for those younger than that.

sickoftheholidays · 09/05/2011 21:35

sorry, but not reasonable. Its an 18 for a reason. I dont care what bribes/threats/whining I get from my DS, he wont be getting it until he's 18 years old.

Maiasaurus · 09/05/2011 21:35

No.

K999 · 09/05/2011 21:36

No, it's fine. DD2 (4) plays it.....

IloveDMs · 09/05/2011 21:36

DS is 10 and asked for it for the wii. We said no. It is an 18 and personally I think he should wait until then. It is diffcukt when their friends have access to it through older siblings. Luckily DS has accepted our decision. I know very little about te game but an 18 is an 18 for a good reason.

usualsuspect · 09/05/2011 21:37

11 is too young ...14/15 I would say ok

FabbyChic · 09/05/2011 21:38

It's no worse than the new Harry Potter for god sake

LynetteScavo · 09/05/2011 21:39

No.

And if I found out DS had played it at a friends house he would never go there again.

If you would let your DS look at porn and consume as much alcohol as he wanted, then I can understand why you might let him engage with this game.

macdoodle · 09/05/2011 21:40

Umm not my DS!
I am being slated on another site for suggesting it is NOT reasonable so thought I was going quite mad.

Nay,nay and a thousand times nay.DS 11y.o. tries to convince me that everyone in his class plays C.o.D. I've spoken to his mates and maybe 2 of them actually do.I've told him the 18 rate is for a reason and I was once an 11 y.o. therefore I can see through his lies attempts to con me.( Though we do let him play Halo science fantasy kind of thingies).Stand your ground.

AuntiePickleBottom · 09/05/2011 21:45

i recently read an article that sugest football games are more dangerous than this game

www.gamepolitics.com/2011/05/03/football-games-cause-more-aggression-shooters-say-uk-researchers

however my DCs will not be playing this game ever, as by the time they are in there teens it will be like playing the nintendo 64 iygwim :p

flaxensunshine · 09/05/2011 21:50

My DS is 13 and plays it. You have to judge your own child.

LynetteScavo · 09/05/2011 22:36

It's not about judging your child, it's about what you are happy with them being exposed to.

And to a certain extent the judging has already been done by those who hand out the certificates. This was awarded an 18 for a reason.

I judge my 12 year old to be perfectly capable of safely learning to drive. Even if there were no police to enforce the law, I wouldn't let him drive because cars, basically have a 17 certificate on them.

LynetteScavo · 09/05/2011 22:38

And I've played violent games myself. And much as I found them fun, I don't want my DS to experience those levels of what-ever-it-is.

Time for bed, as I've lost my vocab! Night!

KittySpencer · 09/05/2011 22:43

My 10 and 12 year old both play it.

Every boy in younger son's class (Yr 5) who has an Xbox has Black Ops (probably about two-thirds of them).

macdoodle · 09/05/2011 22:49

Those who do let their DC play it, out of curiosity, do you let them watch 18 rated movies. And if not what is the difference. Am genuinely curious. It has been said on the other site that I cant say as I have girls, and to be faor my 10 yr old DD is only interested in dance/singing/playing games, she would hate black ops.

Pumpster · 09/05/2011 22:51

My ds had it, has sold it now. He is 12. Yes I have let him watch some 18 films such as diehard - my choice.

troisgarcons · 09/05/2011 22:57

Have to say - DS (is that DipShit?) 1 plays it ......and has done since he was 12.... TBH I H8 txt spk .... I marvel at the marvel at the level of tourettes across the cyberbnet ....Mind you he's yet to call people cunting like you lot do.

inchoccyheaven · 09/05/2011 23:01

No I would not let my 11 yr old play it or indeed anything above a 12 rating. What is the rush for them to play 18s at such a young age? If they play that now what will they play when they are 18?
I think it desensitizes ( ?) them to violence etc. Not saying they will become violent or homecidal maniacs but just have less empathy for situations that many would find distressing.

pleasekeepcalmandcarryon · 09/05/2011 23:04

I recently let my DS 10 have up to 15 cert, I won't let him have Black Ops (despite much begging). A lot of his friends have it though and other 18 certs. In an ideal world I would only let him have 12 cert and below but I have had to balance that with his considerable distress at being one of the only boys not to own certain games- COD, Halo etc. He does have playing limitations though, no more than 1hr midweek and 2hrs at weekend.

I hate these games but with 3 sons I don't think I will see the back of them any time soon.

Heifer · 09/05/2011 23:06

For those that allow their U18s to play, have you turned on the parental control that tones down the blood, gore and bad language?

KittySpencer · 09/05/2011 23:08

Re films, With my DC it would depend on the film - they have watched some 15/18 cert films - things like Die Hard and Terminator. They like and watch 'boys' films with guns, and car chases.

They never watch horror type films, whatever the certificate (unlike most of my childhood friends who were watching Poltergeist and Nightmare on Elm Street at a similar age).

Having said that, they also love kids films, and have watched Toy Story about a hundred times. At the weekend we spent a lovely couple of hours watching Hotel for Dogs together :)

cantspel · 09/05/2011 23:41

My 13 year old has played it but prefers fifa and my 15 year old has played it but prefers halo. I dont know of any teenage boys who haven't played it and most have their own copy of it.
My boys have watched some 18 films but neither likes horrors so have no wish to see Nightmare on elm or such like.

Oakmaiden · 09/05/2011 23:46

My husband plays it, but my son, who is 13, is not allowed.

I might let him by the time he is 16, depending on the game. They are legally allowed to have sex and join the army at 16, so I think it is a bit odd not to let them play a shooty game on the computer.

FreudianSlipOnACrown · 09/05/2011 23:53

I hate games like that. IMHO they are worse than 18 films as you are immersed in it and acting as the perpetrator rather than passively watching it
