An announcement was made on the news today

Imagine the domestic scene

"Darling you have a letter, they are charging you with shoplifting"

"Good, that means they,ve dropped the manslaughter charge."

I was listening to this on the radio today.

What a bloody daft idea.

They will just refuse to take the letter. I assume it will have to be signed for? They just won't sign for it.

They claim this is to save money? Hmm

Oh. Police officers fill in 70 forms for each arrest. I know, let's make it easier by, er, let me think... reducing the forms? Nah! Let's prosecute by post! Much more sensible.

What's next

Dear Mr Jones
You have been found guilty of arson. Kindly confine yourself to your bedroom for the next three and a half years.

Yours sincerely

Judge Offisrokker.

Or worse

Dear Scumbag,

You have been found guilty of domestic violence. Please stay home.

Hmm

You may think that you are joking but they have pledged to cut the numbers of prisoners to all but those who pose a serious risk to society.

Is this a new thing? I know someone this happened to back in 2018, they were interviewed for a fraud / theft offence towards the end of 2017, not under arrest or anything, all 'voluntary' though there was an implied threat of arrest if they didn't comply.
They heard nothing back until the January of 2018 where they received notice in the post that they were being prosecuted and to appear in magistrates court on XYZ date.

When they told me I told them to ring the courts because it sounded dodgy but it was all legit.
They were charged with a criminal offence without being arrested and summonsed to court through a letter in the post.

No, you’re posting on a 12 year old thread.

Haha Ooops I didn't even look at the date, the thread was top of my feed on the aibu page though I see now that there was some sort of glitch thing yesterday where old posts were showing up.

If I ever decide to live a life of crime I'll be screwed because our postman only comes once a week 😅
