To ask for a bit of help from you guys? *date related*

OK, so I have a date coming up, and it's my first in two years.

Now, here's the problem. I don't have anything to wear. Well, I do... but nothing I WOULD wear on a first date, or that suits my figure. I'm a stereotypical pear shape, and struggle with jeans for this reason. So, I was wondering if any of you have any suggestions on something I could wear to flatter my figure and minimise my horrendous thighs

Grin Sorry, I trust you guys more than anyone else... I have no clue about these things. No clue at all!

Where are you going for your date?

DontCallMePeanut · 09/05/2011 03:43

Just for a quiet couple of drinks.

turn up topless.

Then he won't notice your thighs.

CareyFakes · 09/05/2011 07:06

Not sure what to suggest, what do you normally wear?

I have a coffee date on Tuesday (second date this year, go me) but super nervous about this one because we have hit it off via text/email/calling and just want to know if the chemistry that is so important will be there, gutted if it doesn't :(

What do you feel comfortable wearing usually?

chelstonmum · 09/05/2011 08:43

My friend has the same issue with jeans..... im more 'all middle' although baby bump isnt helping the situation, lol.

She often wears really flattering wide leg linen trousers with a vest top and cardi or a flattering jersey dress, nipped in at the waist and skims the bits you dont really like!

This one is summery and a nice thigh skimming length. Lovely with sandals and a vintage bag!

Most important thing is to be comfortable, and remember he is meeting you because he wants to, not because you might have a makeover beforehand! x

PMSL at picklesarnie Grin

a-line dresses/skirts are good for pear shapes. and if you wear a jacket make sure it stops just on the widest part of your hips, don't wear a long one that covers your bum, it makes it look bigger!

oh, and i always find a good pair of spanx pants holds everything up in the right place for me Grin

JanMorrow · 09/05/2011 18:46

Take a look in Dorothy Perkins, I just got a gorgeous dress from there. Very causal and summery. New look also have some nice ones.. or the beach dresses in m&s. Just wear them with black leggings. Then not'll look pretty but in an effortless way. Have fun!

Hardhatonamission · 09/05/2011 18:47

Jeans and a long top with a nice pair of shoes. Get a top that covers your bum and if you like your waist go for a belted round the middle number.

minipie · 09/05/2011 19:04

I reckon a casual dress (jersey/cotton) is the way forward. Don't wear mega heels though or it could look too dressed up. Boots or flats or small heels better. Black tights or leggings will also dress it down, if it's not too hot.

bittersweetvictory · 09/05/2011 19:36

i would go for leggings and a long floaty top that comes down past the thighs.

chocolatehobnobs · 09/05/2011 19:38

What are your best bits that you like drawing attention to?

colditz · 09/05/2011 19:39

nice loose black trousers, with a FANTASTIC top.

florencedougal · 09/05/2011 19:39

one of my all time pet hates is the phrase "you guys"

barf

MrsCampbellBlack · 09/05/2011 19:40

How tall are you? What size/colouring and budget if you're prepared to buy something new?

Probably be best posting in S&B though Smile

MrsCampbellBlack · 09/05/2011 19:41

Oh and how old are you - I mean are we talking miss selfridge or something a little more mature?

catinthehat2 · 09/05/2011 19:48

I must say I don't like 'barf'

so I think we can call it quits now in the single-post-nothing-much-to- contribute-to-the-thread stakes and let the style ladies do their thing now

HTH

MrsCampbellBlack · 09/05/2011 19:55

I do love you cat Smile

MrsCampbellBlack · 09/05/2011 20:04

I think a dress would be your best bet really - as would skim thighs and make most of small waist and slim arms.

Whistles cut brilliantly for pear shapes - have you had a look on their website? If not DP or New Look. You can dress it down with a fitted denim jacket and wedge sandals or flat sandals.

Go for something though thats in your comfort zone and that you feel good in - so good underwear important - although obviously he won't be seeing that Wink

280169 · 09/05/2011 20:07

lol at pickle

what age size are you also what sort of budget are you thinking of

i love you guys btw it covers everyone

thelittlefriend · 09/05/2011 20:09

I'm a pear shape and A-line skirts / dresses are my friends. It doesn't have to be too dressy, but I always feel a bit more like I'm actually going somewhere special if I'm not in my usual jeans etc

DontCallMePeanut · 09/05/2011 20:18

apologies, Florence. It's habit... I have too many male friends, I guess and have picked it up from them over the years... Whoops.

Mrs CB, I'm 5 ft 5, a size 12 up top and a 14-16 bottom. I'd say a budget of £100 tops. And I'm 26.

Chocolatehobnobs... erm... I actually can't think of an area I AM happy with... Gok would have a field day with me... Grin

colditz black's slimming, isn't it... forgot about that, TY.

chelston It's nice, but I'm not sure it's something that would suit me, but thank you...

I did come across this earlier... Not sure if that'd work with a pear shape? Or is it too over dressy for a date... Aaaargh, this is why I don't usually date! Too stressful! Grin

MrsCampbellBlack · 09/05/2011 20:24

Peanut - that dress is fab! Take a denim or leather jacket with you and will look lovely.

And I think that would work very well on a pear shape - you are young! Some nice bangles would look good - what footwear?

DontCallMePeanut · 09/05/2011 20:28

Footwear, I have no idea as of yet... I hate flats,, but pretty much live in what my mum calls "thug boots" (kinda biker-style, just over ankle high) and "fairy boots" (really soft material and the only truly flat shoes I wear)

I did have a confirmation from best friend that he, and most guys he knows, would love for a girl to turn up in that style of dress... he loves polka dots anyway Grin

OP posts:
MrsCampbellBlack · 09/05/2011 20:33

And halter neck is very sexy I think!

Well biker boots could work but I'd go for more of a sandal - perhaps wedges

DontCallMePeanut · 09/05/2011 20:52

Hmm, wedges are doable Grin ty MrsCB
