To make my cat into mittens

Or possibly a nice collar trim

Just putting cat no 2 out before bed when old lady cat starts yowling outside and I open door to congratulate her (she's 13 not bad for an old bird) on catching an impressively squirming young rat which is fast in her mouth

She dashes through open door (rat in mush) thinks about the stairs I scream runs into the kitchen drops rat, rat runs, she dashes out back....

What do I do? I don't want a lightly chewed rat as a pet or breakfast!

Rat behind cupboards. Cats think I've signed for delivery and are not having any of it!

Aargh!

Ps no animals were harmed in production of this message nor even the rat. Advice and sympathy desperately needed though (or the cat gets it - sorry bit late for me)

Next door's cat made the rat in our garden into mittens this morning....

Just thought I'd share.

AgentZigzag · 07/05/2011 23:47

If she's 13 then she should understand the house rules that if you bring it in, you take it out.

Stern words needed, then put her in the kitchen until she remembers who's boss (which unfortunately isn't likely to be you) and escorts her Sunday dinner suggestion for you, out.

cinnamonswirls · 07/05/2011 23:47

Ooo looks like scummy river rat not plump pub rat - then I might be on a winner sadly both of mine ratters and don't touch birds (except for the goldcrest we don't talk about)

Id leave the rat and the cat in the kitchen overnight and hope the cat is sucessful.............

This is one (of many) reason why I do not have a cat!

CrispyCakeHead · 07/05/2011 23:48

Ha, we thought our cat had caught a rat earlier today.....on closer examination we realised it was one of our gerbils Sad. Cue hysterical children, bonkers mental cat who can't understand why we took it from her, and yet more hysterics from the children....

I feel your pain..

Vallhala · 07/05/2011 23:48

If the rat comes out trap it with a wellie boot, get him running into the dark, "secure" tunnel of the boot and into the foot of it, turn upright and hold onto the top so he can't get out and deposit as far from the house as possible.

Don't laugh, it works!

Vallhala · 07/05/2011 23:51

Oh..... and don't leave the cat to sort out the rat unless you want an injured cat and some hefty vet bills if he gets bitten. Rat bites in cats are notorious for becoming infected.

My (late, oddly missed) PET rat bit me and I ended up on ABs for an infected arm, the bugger!

cinnamonswirls · 07/05/2011 23:57

Oh lord! Am back on computer instead of stupid phone

Cat has buggered off leaving me with her guest and to sort out her mess (I feel like my mother) and is now laughing at me from the top of the wall.

Am poised to go in with Wellie

No have lured in very large boy cat who is investigating - I may have mittens or at least finger warmers yet!

PMSL at 'cats think I've signed for delivery', thats just what they do, drop and run before you've checked the goods out Wink

AgentZigzag · 08/05/2011 00:01

I was only joking saying put her in the kitchen with the rat.

I love tame rats, but wouldn't like to be cornered by a wild one.

Is it an urban myth they go for your jugular if cornered

cinnamonswirls · 08/05/2011 00:03

Nope he wasn't interested in an AV rat both cats running round to one door running through the house and asking to go out the other

Have decided maybe pet exchange is the answer - if he isn't a nippy rat he can stay

The wellie thing does work. I have done it many times.

Best of British...

cinnamonswirls · 08/05/2011 00:12

Sigh cat chaos is over neither will come in now

Am going to leave back door open a rat sized amount and hope. I remember what men are for at times like this......

Wanders off to bed humming "there's a rat in my kitchen what am I gonna do...."

Wellie in the morning - sounds like a job for SuperDS!

We were having some work done on the house and so was sleeping temporarily on a blow-up bed downstairs. Heard the cat mewling strangely..half asleep until a rat ran over me. That woke me up!

Rat is probably terrified but that's no help really. Can you leave doors open for it to escape?

FlaminGreatGallah · 08/05/2011 00:37

You might want to sell your cat for parts to these people instead.

And if you are wondering why I happened upon a forum dedicated to making costumes from the show "Cats!" as a hobby, DD has a dancing show soon and needs one. Honest.
