The world is continuing to go to hell in a handcart.

i'm not sure we'll all go to hell because of a few missing capital letters though.

i bet this post is really winding you up, i'n'it?

Y.a.n.b.u.

Nancy66 · 07/05/2011 13:56

It's the use of: 'whilst' that really gets to me - I seem to read it on every post.

While while while while

CharlotteBronteSaurus · 07/05/2011 14:01

yabu
the shift key is hard to manage when you're feeding a baby
I CAN JUST PUT CAPS LOCK ON AND SHOUT AT YOU INSTEAD IF YOU PREFER

ScousyFogarty · 07/05/2011 14:02

darrell I never omplain about spelling etc on Mumsnet; because I dont wantus to become exclusive. Mumsnet works because it accepts everyone.

amberleaf · 07/05/2011 14:04

yabu

AgentZigzag · 07/05/2011 14:09

I use capitals and punctuate, but if I was typing with one hand I'd probably leave the capitals, and if I'm not sure where the apostrophe goes I leave them out.

I like slang, and I mostly write as I speak.

YABU, so long as you can read it anything goes in my book.

ScousyFogarty · 07/05/2011 14:10

You could not have a mumsnet entrance exam. It would be cameroonish

Goblinchild · 07/05/2011 14:10

It irritates me, and I tend to judge the poster as sloppy or indifferent.
But it's internet chat, not an assessed piece or a job application.

Ilythia · 07/05/2011 14:11

You are not being unreasonable. We need a pedant filter sometimes.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 07/05/2011 14:11

The world is indeed going to hell in a handcart, OP, but not through the misuse of capital letters and punctuation on a chat board.

Find a grip and when you do, hold on to it very tightly... Grin

Dontbugmemalone · 07/05/2011 14:13

YABU
Some posters type quickly to save time. It doesn't bother me, I don't really understand the problem. Do you write capitals if you have a live chat (facebook, msn etc.)? I'm sure that would slow the conversation down.
Mumsnet is a online forum, not a punctuation test. As long posters can understand what other posters are writing, that's all that matters.

fartingfran · 07/05/2011 14:13

Scousy, Darrell isn't talking about spelling. Even the poorest linguists surely can manage to stick a capital at the start of a sentence?

nickelbabe · 07/05/2011 14:15

i can't be bothered sometimes to use caps.
it's dull.

that's why they moved the ' from shift+2 to below the @ - so you don't have to use the shift key to get it.

HighHeidYin · 07/05/2011 14:17

LyingWitch, yours is my second favourite MN name, next to sheepgomeep. Thought you might like to know.

As you were.

LadyShapes · 07/05/2011 14:19

Nancy66 - What's wrong with whilst? I've just looked in Fowler's to try and find out, but I am none the wiser. Aren't while and whilst interchangeable?

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 07/05/2011 14:21

HighHeidYin... Ohhh... thank you so much! It's not one of my brainchilds. My husband suggested it and apparently it's from 'Viz' magazine. Grin

southeastastra · 07/05/2011 14:22

I am quite able to use the correct punctuation yet i choose not to :D

HighHeidYin · 07/05/2011 14:22

Clever dh Grin

Nancy66 · 07/05/2011 14:24

Ladyshapes - they mean the same thing but 'while' is the accepted form.
There's never any reason to use 'whilst' - people assume that variation is the more traditional use of the word but, actually, it isn't.

I find posts more engaging and easier to read if there are stop/start points etc.

OP posts:
Nancy66 · 07/05/2011 14:25

Whilst isn't older - people assume so but it's not the case.
