in spending my £300 long service award on pics of DS

Had my 15 year service when i was on ML so when i went back told i could pick something of £300 to be presented to me.

Thought for ages and ages and decided that i would love to have some professional photos of DS taken. Had them done by a local (non franchise) photographer that has been going for many years and even took pics of me and my bro years ago.

Anyway had pics done seen proofs on computer, and when i saw them i nearly cried, they were so good and just captured DS personality. Photographer is doing me three of the pics as a blended photo on a canvas and that is costing £325, then instead of getting prints of the other pics for relatives i'm having them on a CD and it costs £29.50 per pic (i'm paying for 4 pics and he's chucking in the other one that i wasn't going to bother paying for for free')

Well i would be really happy with this but since a few people have said how mad i am for paying so much for pics but having read how much venture etc are i really don't think this is too badly priced. I couldn't have had the £300 cash from work, we have to choose something, and this is something i couldn't have afforded but will really love and cherish for years to come.

I think by typing this i have reassured myself that IANBU but could be grateful for comments confirming (or otherwise) that i am not being ripped off like i'm being told

I have professional photos of my DS, also done by a local photographer years ago. Still look at them and it takes me right back to the very day. YANBU, this is something you would not otherwise have had. Enjoy

I think it's a lovely thing to have chosen and as helen says, something you may not have had the opportunity to have otherwise. Lovely to look back on the photos in years to come, particuarly as they capture your son's personality so well :)
In my opinion, you made a great choice.

We did some photos at those type of ridiculous prices and though I thought the pictures were gorgeous at the time, they aren't any more special than the other photos I've taken with our camera around the time. I mean, the children look the same, it's only the background and lighting that's different!

We got loads of compliments but tbh I don't think it's worth it and will not be doing it again.

worraliberty · 07/05/2011 00:13

As long as you can afford them for any subsequent children you might have (if you do) then YANBU.

scottishmummy · 07/05/2011 00:14

if they bring you joy, wonderful idea

Something I wish I'd done when DS was tiny... YANBU

thanks for comments everyone.

Megapixel i appreciate the comments and i don't think i would shell out my own cash but i had to spend this £300 on something.

The latest things other people have had are- laptops (i already have a laptop so don't need), towards a flat screen telly (my 11 mo goes up and puts his sticky fingers all over the telly so i would rather than on my 12 year old telly than on a brand new one)

Also the pics don't have any background and lighting that we don't normally have, photographer just came in and saw DS peeping round door and said 'thats a good photo' then couple of him peeping round door to his ball and a few just sitting on dining room table. There was no more background and lighting then we have for our everyday pics but I think with the digital camera that i have there is a bit of a delay when i press the shutter so lots of the time DS is looking away

Other people's opinions are exactly what it says on the tin. and you don't have to sign up to them.

If you'd been given the £300 iin cash it's probable that whatever you spent it on wouldn't have had much longevity.

Instead, you've got something that you'll treasure for the rest of your life - and that's what I call a wise investment.

worraliberity>> hmmmm good point suppose that means i should
wait until i am near my 20 year service award before having any other children

The other thing to spend money on is a decent camera of course... Canon Ixus have very quick shutter times, and you can keep your finger half on the button and take one after another, just a second apart :)

But I think you're right to go for the pro ones... any chance of a peek on yer profile?

megapixels · 07/05/2011 00:23

It looks like you've thought this through and it's the right decision for you Morph. :)

Morph2 · 07/05/2011 00:24

hmmmmm hang on i'll just see if i can add one give me a min

cat64>> i can't have the cash (else i would). I have to spend it on something that i can get presented to me. )They like to send the pics to the paper)

I really don't think it would go down well for my future prospects at work if i spent in on a monthly grocery shop

I've just tried to add the pics but i've forgotten my password so will have to add 2 morro as too late to work out now

yanbu but 29 quid per pic to go on a disc is a rip off, for the £300 could he not have put all of them on the disc?
