To wonder why people don't understand that the rules for mini-roundabouts are the same as for "normal" ones?

Twice in two days I've seen people behave as if they have taken leave of their senses at mini-roundabouts:
a) Old lady blasted our horn at us because we were approaching from her right on a mini-roundabout and she was ready to go straight ahead. She clearly thought she had right of way when she didn't and was about to drive out in front of us. Actually she looked very old so maybe she was confused Confused.
b) Witnessed the same thing happening when a car ahead of me cut across the path of a car turning right (and travelling in the opposite direction to us, so coming from our right) at a mini-roundabout.

Do people think rules are different for mini-roundabouts??

I see this regularly - why??

we tend to find the opposite - in that all parties sit at the round about like scared rabbits waiting for someone to be brave enough to venture out. The trouble is once everyone has stopped - who does have right of way ?!

I also see people stop at the round about because they can see someone appraoching on the entrance to their left.

No idea why people get so baffled by them.

Around Edinburgh city bypass there are a number of roundabouts with lights on them
The number of people who ignore the lights is amazing

My present bugbear is the mini roundabout in the grouns of the Infirmary where those coming out the car park, straight onto the mini roundabout never seem to give way to the traffic

Sillyness · 09/05/2011 13:25

Weirdly enough, I got told after passing my driving test (by the test instructor as he said,'you've passed, but... you didn't need to indicate over the mini-roundabouts'

bear in mind, i was a bloody good learner driver who had to take my test 5 times because each judge -man-thing contridicited themselves.

i then told this man that if i hadnt indicated, he would have failed me for failing to do 'proper roundabout procedure'! Hmm

illgetyoubutler · 09/05/2011 13:26

Not read whole thread so not sure wether this has been said yet, but wirh regards to the indicating.
My instructer told me you do have to indicate at mini roundabouts to show your intention of where you wish to go, but its not always neccisary to indicate to come off.
Alot of heavy/quick steering its involved at mini roundabouts, which can become clumsy/difficult when trying to keep hands at 10 to 2 whilst doing so, THEN having to use your hand to operate the indicator, it may cause the learner driver to temporarily lose control of the steering.

Yes I don't know anyone who indicates at coming off mini roundabouts. They are so small that there'd only be second or two between indicating to get on and then to get off.

I wanna have a crack at the Magic Roundabout in Swindon Grin

ZillahWhoDrankTooMuchGin · 09/05/2011 13:48

There's a weird one in Ironbridge - there is a road off to the left but in order to take it (becasue of steep hill and angle of road) you have to indicate right and go all the way round...(come in at 6 oclock - go all way round clock and off at 9 oclock)

The amount of people who go the wrong way round it is quite incredible - it scrambles brains...

Talking about mini roundabouts at tests, my niece failed her test because someone didn't give way to the right and almost went into the car she was driving, she had to swerve onto the mini roundabout or risk the car getting hit and even the instructor getting injured. He failed her! I'm not sure how she could have won this one, is killing the instructor on your test a pass or fail?

He accepted that if she hadn't done it he could have been seriously injured.

megapixels · 09/05/2011 16:23

I think she would have failed because of the "defensive driving" approach you are supposed to take. So, anticipating that other motorists are NOT always going to be following the rules as they should be, and reacting accordingly.

limitedperiodonly · 09/05/2011 16:28

I hate people who stop at roundabouts when nothing is coming or think Stop is spelt Give Way.

Before anyone says, I do realise I would be in the wrong if I drove into the back of someone waiting at a junction even though there was nothing on the horizon.

There's nothing in the Highway Code about muttering under your breath though.

confuddledDOTcom · 09/05/2011 16:33

She was told it was for going on the roundabout. It wasn't someone who was stopped that she could have anticipated may pull out, it was someone who was going too fast and didn't stop or slow down when they got to the roundabout.

diabolo · 09/05/2011 16:35

I personally hate people who give way to you at a roundabout when THEY have right of way - causes mass confusion and horn beeping from everyone.

PLEASE DON'T DO IT! YOU ARE NOT BEING NICE!

limitedperiodonly · 09/05/2011 16:51

Yes diabolo. Also these people - I'm going to try to describe them, but it might not be clear.

The people who have right of way at traffic lights but instead of going straight on want to turn left or right - which is okay.

What's not okay is when they are confused by the red light showing for the people on the road they've just turned into and stop dead.

Did I explain that properly?

They're bad enough when you're driving behind them but potentially lethal when you're waiting to cross and they wave you across.

I get particularly cross with those who get angry when you decline to walk in front of them in case they're rammed into you by an articulated lorry or suddenly decide to go because they're clearly idiots who don't know how to drive.
