I have just been told the significance of these.

Shock

Actually, I think I'm getting to the stage where nothing really shocks me anymore.

I thought the trainers thing was to commemorate a dead yoof?

JamieAgain · 06/05/2011 13:20

Or could just be someone pratting about

tbquery · 06/05/2011 13:22

I thought the trainers marked out gang territories.

Buda · 06/05/2011 13:23

There are trainers on the wires outside my parents house. They are not drug dealers. Nor were there any dead yoofs about. Have seen the trainers over the wires here in Hungary too.

Katiepoes · 06/05/2011 13:24

Here it's usually a sign of a stag group passing through and being 'witty'.

spangers · 06/05/2011 13:24

There's about 3 sets of trainers on wires where I live, one was replaced with 2 dead birds at Halloween. I thought they were just a joke Confused

BitOfFun · 06/05/2011 13:25

From googling:

iirc - beads and rosaries were mentioned in a gang awareness training class I took. I try to keep up every year with the training - 2011; I promise I will find more time and take more of it.

Anyway, from the gang awareness handbook somewhere....

The use of colored beads is also popular with gang members. The
color of the bead is dependent on the color the gang has adopted for
their gang. The bead can be made into a necklace as illustrated or
worn in the shoelaces, made into a key chain, worn in braids in their
hair and used in other fashions. Colored rubberbands worn in hair
braids or around their wrist can also be indicators of gang membership.
The use of colored rosary beads and other religious articles have also
been noted. These are subtle indicators of gang membership and are
often hard to notice if you are not looking for them. With the
introduction of strict dress codes and the use of uniforms in the school
systems these type of indicators seem to be favored by the gangsters.

BitOfFun · 06/05/2011 13:27

Oh, and from my mum: she knew Wayne Rooney was a bad 'un from when he was a teenager because him and his mates used to wear rosary beads around their neck, and wearing them is very disrespectful- they are meant as counting beads, not jewellery.

Katiepoes · 06/05/2011 13:28

I knew it! The Holy Faith nuns at my school were really a gang! With their matching cardigans and scarves and silvery rosary beads...they even had gang names like Bernadina and Concepta.

ScroobiousPip · 06/05/2011 13:31

Here trainers over wires indicates a local tinnie house, ie the local drug dealer.

Still not got my head around the blue beads though...

working9while5 · 06/05/2011 13:35

Is that really true about trainers on wires?? Wouldn't that be an ad to the police to raid houses in the area on a regular basis? Confused

Clytaemnestra · 06/05/2011 13:43

Trainers over wires aren't for specific houses (at least not here) they're for gang boundaries.

kreecherlivesupstairs · 06/05/2011 13:46

See, it just gets more complicated. Drugs or dead people or gang boundaries? Which one. I suppose it depends on where you live.

Housemum · 06/05/2011 13:48

Trainers and wires???

limitedperiodonly · 06/05/2011 13:50

Wayne Rooney also wore a white plastic rosary which I think was prison issue - the beads pop apart so you can't strangle anyone. Twat.

JamieAgain · 06/05/2011 14:30

potato-face adulterous twat

CareyFakes · 06/05/2011 14:36

That's 2 minutes of my life I'll not get back...

GrimmaTheNome · 06/05/2011 14:58

We don't have any wires near us, all the cables are nicely buried. I thought it was only isolated properties which had telegraph poles/wires nowadays.

TBH I'm more taken aback by Paisleyleafs link, that there's actually an organisation which spends time on money because it thinks praying while fiddling with beads can help the world.

Actually my favourite ever post. High five for convent schools. Bernadina in da house!! Haha!!!

Housemum · 06/05/2011 19:31

Serves me right for not refreshing the page, look a right numpty as my question was answered about 20 posts back!

Probably all urban myths like the "shag bands" of a few years back, big scandal (well, probably in the Express and the Mail) as apparently the colour of the rubber bracelet you wore said how far you'd gone. Turns out that was all made up.

Someone told me that the random fireworks you hear let off when it's not New Year/Guy Fawkes are a sign that the local dealer has more supplies. Yeah, right, couldn't just be someone's party or teenagers messing about then?

Housemum · 06/05/2011 19:32

Should I feel offended that we were all given white plastic rosaries on my Hourney in Faith course? Perhaps they thought we looked like stranglers?

Cymar · 06/05/2011 21:33

OK, rosaries make me think of religion and BitOfFun mentioned gangs and colours. So, because I've lived in NI, the 1st thing coming to mind is Catholicism and Catholic gangs (Real/Provisional IRA/Dissident Republicans or other religious fanaticals). I could be totally wrong and it could be something to do with sex. Just a guess really.

C'mon OP, don't keep us in suspense for too long.

whosmindingthecorgis · 06/05/2011 21:46

Cymar I dont think you'll find too many real ira members anywhere near a catholic church or having rosary beads. The catholic church in n ireland distanced itself from terrorists in the 1980's. That scum are hardly religious fanatics as they wouldn't know where to find a church. They are thugs and criminals plain and simple. Calling them religious fanatics only gives them creedance.

Ihavewelliesbuttheyrenotgreen · 06/05/2011 22:55

Surely marking out where drug dealers live using trainers or whatever other means makes it very easy for the police. Or am I just being naive? Will keep an eye out for trainers on wires in my sleepy village (not for drug gaining purposes, just out of interest)

NulliusInVerba · 06/05/2011 23:28

Prison issue rosaries were green not white

God knows (excuse the pun) What on earth they mean or what trainers mean.
