To Have A Bath Tonight?

midori1999 · 05/05/2011 16:06

I am 31 + 2 weeks pregnant. At the start of my pregnancy I was advised by the consultant not to have baths, go swimming or have sex due to the potential risk of infection.

My waters broke at 14+5 in my twin pregnancy last year and this led to my girls being born very prematurely at 23+5 and us losing them. They don't know why they broke, it might have been due to infection (although a swab showed no infection at the time of the rupture), it might have been due to blood clots in the placenta as they have since found I have a clotting disorder (which I am being treated for during pregnancy with asprin and heparin) or it could have been for any number of reasons. I am never likely to know for sure.

I'm shattered and haven't had a bath for 28 weeks. I really fancy one and am wondering if it would be OK to have one if I cleaned the bath with bleach/antibacterial cleaner first and rinsed it well, didn't have the water too hot and didn't stay in too long? Obviously I don't want to do a single thing to risk my baby though.

IABU, aren't I? Sad

God never mind the bath, 9 months without sex is LONG!
In answer to your OP, if youve been advised not to then i really wouldnt risk it. Sorry!

Crysalis · 05/05/2011 16:09

yabu. don't have a bath if medical advice is not to.

tallulahxhunny · 05/05/2011 16:10

cant you just have a shower?

gawdblimey · 05/05/2011 16:10

is having a bath more important that the unborn baby to you?

BaadRobot · 05/05/2011 16:10

So very sorry to read of your twins Sad and I think under your circumstances I would do as the consultant says. Are you able to have a shower instead? Not as relaxing I know...

GeneHuntsMistress · 05/05/2011 16:11

I would say not to do it, purely on the grounds that you won't enjoy it at all as will be tense throughout, worrying that you shouldn't be doing it.....

So sorry for your loss. I hope rest of your pregnancy is not too hard x

MrsCarriePooter · 05/05/2011 16:12

In your situation I wouldn't I'm afraid - although I would add I'm the sort of person who didn't drink any alcohol in pregnancy thinking the total ban was daft, but also thinking I'd never forgive myself if something happened and would drive myself mad wondering if it were my fault.

I'm sorry to hear what happened to your twins. My daughter was born prematurely and she's fine, but I know two 31 weekers with cerebral palsy and other problems. There's a whole train of ifs, ifs, ifs but IF in contrary to your consultant's advice you had a bath and IF your waters broke and IF somehow infection was introduced and IF that resulted in premature birth - well, even best case scenario you'd probably have six weeks or so of being sat by another neonatal cot wondering if it were in some way something you'd done.

It's not long now...

valiumredhead · 05/05/2011 16:13

Why would a bath be a risk of infection?......... never heard that before!

I wouldn't if the consultant said not to.

RunnerHasbeen · 05/05/2011 16:15

You won't be able to relax in the bath even if you do have one, so I doubt it would be as nice as you are hoping. There must be some complex medical reason for this (atypical) consultant advice, and therefore we are not qualified to say it will be okay, sorry.

midori1999 · 05/05/2011 16:19

izzybizzybuzzybee, yes it really is, but DH and I are living apart at the moment as he has had to move for work and I need to stay here until I've had the baby, so that's not too much of a problem. Grin

Of course, I know you're all right. I can shower and do everyday, but it's just not the same. I will have to make do though. I think I will ask the consultant at my next appointment if she thinks a bath would be OK now as from what I can gather the risk is low and the advice is precautionary. Otherwise, it's not too long to go now. Funny how time seems to go more slowly as it goes on though... Grin

It wouldn't be so bad if I could have some cake or a bar of chocolate, but as I also have insulin controlled gestational diabetes, that's out of the question too. I can have a cup of Options hot chocolate though... Hmm

Shower and Options is it then... Grin

Thats not so bad if your living apart then but still crappy! Enjoy your shower and options and just think of the fabby post coital bubble bath you can have in 9 or so weeks (well maybe more since u kinda need to wait til ur 6 week check!) x

PregolaLola · 05/05/2011 16:26

poor thing, can i ask why your at risk of infection if your waters havn't broken yet though?, just curious as its not something i've heard of

i wouldnt though, safe over sorry and all that
you could just imagine........

midori1999 · 05/05/2011 16:30

Thanks. I will not be waiting until my 6 week check... TMI, I know... Blush

pregolola infection is thought to be the main cause of premature rupture of membranes and can be caused by bacteria introduced into the vagina. Water from a bath or swimming pool can be one medium for this.

Find another way to relax-read a book in bed wth some smelly candles? Treat yourself in another way. If Ihad been told not to the I have to say I wouldn't either.
