Conservative

in a district council election, I know they have far less influence than those elected to Westminster but even so they do hold the reigns on issues such as social care etc that I feel very strongly about.

I know I live in a very conservative area but even so that is not a democratic choice.

So AIBU I feel very disheartened that I was will not able to vote the way I would wish too? (and really miffed at myself for not spoiling the ballot paper but voting for two out of the three as one truely pisses me off!) (Had to choose two candidates)

YANBU

why not stand yourself in the next election?

DorisIsAPinkDragon · 05/05/2011 11:34

I organised my nomination as a parish councillor a couple of weeks ago so I'm starting small Grin but we didn't have to go to election as there were enough candidates for all the seat (democracy in action eh!)

In fact they are one councillor short!

I had to laugh at our local election ballot paper today. They're electing 3 borough councillors, so you can vote for up to 3 of the names - there were 3 Lib Dem candidates and 1 Tory one. So... not much choice then....

Where has the labour party (or any of the others ) gone? I think I need to start a search

Maybe I shopuld put up a few posters ?

Last year a friend of mine was involved in counting the votes. She said there were lots where people had written in BNP under the other party names and then put a tick next to it.

It does demonstarte a lack of representation.

I was not in favour of PR but having such little choice would surely be eradicated under that kind of system (although I realise it's not likely for council elections due to the local nature).

Labour are all in Scotland. They have two parties here, Labour and SNP. Hence you have a choice of socialist or socialist. Tax and spend or tax and spend. Seems odd that they don't bother to put up a candidate in your area though as the Conservatives still field full candidates up here, even though they know they won't get in as they're not in charge of public sector backhanders

Labour are round here (midlands). Conservatives not running in most of the wards.

All the candidates are pretty useless, half the promises listed on the leaflets make of doubt the candidates even know what they're running for since they're promising things that are well beyond the remit of local councillors.

And no I can't run myself, I'm not eligible, otherwise I would!
