There seems to be a lot more "ur", "lols", "u" etc than usual.

Am I being unreasonable and old or is it annoying others?

AlmightyCitrus · 04/05/2011 09:16

Lots of forums now have either a section of their T&C's or a note under the message box saying something along the lines of "please do not use text speak as your post may be deleted"

squeakytoy · 04/05/2011 09:17

Considering the vast array of abbreviations on here, the odd "lol" really does not bother me at all, and I am probably guilty of using it myself. I cant see the point "ur" "u" though as they are lazy. "Lol" is an expression that can make the difference in the context of the post.

mrsoliverramsay · 04/05/2011 09:30

What annoys me even more is when someone makes a spelling mistake and they correct it further down even though it's obvious what the word was meant to be in the first place because they will feel they will get ridiculed by a pendant.

Young people today use text speak. I bet there is a lot of people being put off joining up because of the slating they will receive when reading threads like this.

TurkeyBurgerThing · 04/05/2011 09:35

OMG Hun, wotw wrong wiv it? lol! Chillax.

BOAK BOAK BOAK BOAK.

Argh, I've made myself angry just typing all of that utter cock above. HATE it.

Also What's With People Typing Every Word With A Capital Letter?

Or EvEn WoRsE lIkE tHiS?

YankNCock · 04/05/2011 09:43

YANBU. I hate textspeak. I'm another who writes complete sentences and punctuates even when using the mobile to send texts.

I know it makes me a snob, but I fondly remember the days when you could be fairly certain that most people using the internet were reasonably intelligent and well-educated. I suppose everything gets dumbed down eventually.

imnobody · 04/05/2011 09:45

I would never have the patience to write like that TurkeyBurger. Especially the 2nd one.

GapsAGoodUn · 04/05/2011 09:46

Can't be doing with text speak stuff myself.

In fact, I am known for using apostrophes in my text messages.\

Oh yes.

I am the dictionary definition of "Rock 'n' Roll".

Grin
GKlimt · 04/05/2011 09:57

I'm constantly assaulted by text speak unless DS's mobile is lost, not charged etc and I always reply in full with proper punctuation and grammar[not too good with grammar]. To ensure he can still read normal written English. Grin

I do use lots of abbreviations like tho', thro', probs, wh, w, diffs, para etc and have done so for donkeys years, well before texting was invented because I do a lot of writing by hand and can barely type. So saves me time and is hopefully still intelligible.

My pet hates are the great slabs of writing without paragraphs and misspellings in the title of the topic.Angry

I'm not appalled by it but I do admit to not taking posts written in txt spk very seriously.

blindmelon · 04/05/2011 10:04

I'm the biggest pedant going (pre-kids worked as a proofreader) but as I mainly MN on my phone one-handed while breastfeeding sometimes even I go for the quick fix text speak! Mumsnet is littered with acronyms anyway - MN, BF, DH, DS etc etc, so what's wrong with the odd abbreviation? You're not writing a frikkin novel, it's an internet forum!

Now as for apostrophes in the wrong place, or improper use of your/you're/there/their etc, there is no excuse!

YABU! lol luv ya Grin

VinegarTits · 04/05/2011 10:06

text speak is for teenagers and lazy twats, annoying as fuck

marmaladetwatkins · 04/05/2011 10:17

I have some, ahem, distant relatives on Facebook and they've transcended textspeak and have invented their own language where words are just spelled completely differently. It makes my brain hurt.

Restrainedrabbit · 04/05/2011 10:17

Christ on a bike I am a 30 something (ahem), middle class woman with a Masters degree but am appalled at the irritation expressed on this thread. I'd much rather wade through text speak and help someone than heave my bosom and get pissy about something which in the grand scheme of things is not that important Hmm

carminaburana · 04/05/2011 10:22

I don't mind it / it's probably becoming more mainstream because of twitter and having to cram everything into 20 words - a few politicians have been known to use txt spk on twitter - so YABU - and probably past it.
Get off the internet now!

KaraStarbuckThrace · 04/05/2011 10:27

I am not appalled but I find txtspk deeply irritating (as is lack of paragraphs). I will not bother reading an OP that is written in that way.
I don't even use txtspk when sending text messages!
Although I have been known to use PMSL/LOL on very, very funny threads.
And I use the MN approved acronyms such as YANBU/IYKWIM/DS/DD/DH etc.

dotnet · 04/05/2011 10:37

I LIKE textspeak, when it is used in texts. It saves money! I can get a longish message down to one single payment by doing a bit of precis-ing (learned to do precis in English at school - I hated that exercise) and also 'condensing' via textspeak as well. L8r, u, gr8, ur, gd, mayB, 2B, w8ing 4U etc etc.

Wouldn't you say YANBU and YABU are textspeak?

I don't like LOL, though, so I NEVER, never LOL. (Maybe because I'm a miserable bugger.)

confuseddotcodotuk · 04/05/2011 10:41

I hate text speak too. I slip into certain abbrieviations (lol, iyswim, brb and btw) after speaking to certain friends of mine but I still hate it. I can't understand full on text speak either! I'm supposed to be part of this 'young generation' of people who do it as well! Just never understood the appeal of it or texting being honest.

lubberlich · 04/05/2011 10:41

Hate LOL. Hate it.

Pinkjenny · 04/05/2011 10:42

Can't bear it. The very sight of 'wiv' makes me ill.

FoofffyShmoofffer · 04/05/2011 11:10

Can't stand text speak.
Don't understand grown adults who type: hppy burffdai 2 ma lil man xx

BURFFDAI!!!???? The energy it must take up just to spell that frigging word wrong!

AnUnnamedSource · 04/05/2011 11:16

Nice to see so many other annoyed people!

Perhaps the MN techs could put in a little scan for text speak? If text speak is detected the poster automatically gets sent to netmums the gallows.

OP posts:
petisa · 04/05/2011 11:50

I have hidden my friends who use text speak on Facebook as I just couldn't look at it any more! I'm afraid I do judge when I see people write using text speak on anything other than a mobile.

2rebecca · 04/05/2011 11:53

I ignore threads with textspeak in the first post. If the poster can't be bothered to make the effort to type stuff properly (I don't mind bad spelling and it's easy to not hit a key hard enough for it to register) then I don't bother to read it.
It's not worth getting annoyed about.

Gooseberrybushes · 04/05/2011 11:58

I think it's because there is a generation of badly educated people growing up and having children. Basically.

It will only get worse and if you demur you will be told to "get a life".
