To wonder why anyone buys that 'Growing Up' milk stuff?

No one expects to get their iron content from milk - you get it from the food you eat alongside it (although you shouldn't really drink milk alongside a meal anyway because calcium inhibits iron absorption) so why would you spend money on this product? Does anyone on MN buy it? If so - why?

YANBU and people are being conned by this - more fool them

bubbleymummy · 03/05/2011 20:35

Actually this is the first thread I've ever started about growing up milk! :)

You do make a good point though US - what did everyone do before growing up milk came along? Do we think this is the first generation of children who are fussy eaters?

I tosh you not, meryl....amazing how my 4 have managed without the intervention of follow on milk. Hey, I am merely making an observation, sorry if you feel challenged.

usualsuspect · 03/05/2011 20:39

I did use follow on milk for my DS

scaredoflove · 03/05/2011 20:40

Total scam, it was made to get around the advertising ban on formula for under 6 months - they made it for over 6 months and they can get their names out there through advertising

20 years ago, the guidelines were cows milk from 6 months and we had no follow milks. Non milk drinkers just got dairy from cheese, yoghurt and cows milk in cereal. We don't actually need to drink milk, it's formula makers who have put this into our minds

And I used formula for most of my children (alongside BF) and one of them would have died without it - It's sad to see so many people taken in by the advertising though and paying huge amounts for an unnecessary product

bubbleymummy · 03/05/2011 20:41

Fair enough US - my point still stands though - what did everyone do before follow on milk? I'm pretty sure children have been refusing spinach for generations..... :)

Carnation?

Changing2011 · 03/05/2011 20:42

its all bollocks and ten years ago kids would have had cows milk or nowt! Short memories some people have! Jesus christ they (man from Nestle and Aptamil) will be laughing all the way to the bank!

bubbleymummy · 03/05/2011 20:43

Grin allbie. Ah yes, good old nestle to the rescue!

They knew it was a winner so they dried it and added some extra goodness and created follow on milk. Wish I had shares!

Ragwort · 03/05/2011 20:46

YANBU - total marketing scam and so many fall for it - like so many other 'must-haves for babies/young children'.

Totally agree with you Changing - we've all grown up OK haven't we - without all these 'manufactured products'? Grin.

MayDayChild · 03/05/2011 20:47

I think the stuff is a godsend. We had to live in a hotel for 4 months due to flood at home. No fridge no microwave. Just a kettle!
I couldn't cook. DD ate utter crap the whole time from restaurants and fast food.
Thank goodness she got all vital nutrients for that time period.
It was also far more convenient than cows milk once we got home.
I plan on giving it to DS till he's about 20 months too.

All extra vitamins not required by the body are flushed straight out no harm done.
I eat a healthy balanced diet yet am always borderline anaemic. What if my kids have a similar trait?
What about their skin, nails etc?
Do you take a multi vit ever?
I'm with blackswann!!!

RitaMorgan · 03/05/2011 20:47

YANBU - total scam.

So highly processed too, I'm not keen on giving children things with such long lists of ingredients in them!

Changing2011 · 03/05/2011 20:48

Well, if only I had had growing up milk I could have married Prince William - damn! And I would be a millionaire by now probably Hmm

God my mother was so bloody conditional.

meliesmummy · 03/05/2011 20:48

Why does it bother you? It's not poison! I give it to my dd because she wants a warm drink at bedtime and she doesn't like 'normal' milk. I can't see the harm, if it tops up her vitamins and minerals all the better (and for what it's worth I bf until she was 11 months and she eats a good diet). Stop being so judgey, it's not as if I'm giving her a glass of wine!

Changing2011 · 03/05/2011 20:49

Albie - I agree with you apart from the extra goodness - there isnt any - just a large dose of spin.

Changing2011 · 03/05/2011 20:49

WTF has it got to do with breastfeeding Melie?

It's got nothing to do with bf at all, I wasn't the one who started that one!

Changing2011 · 03/05/2011 20:54

Move along then, no-one really gives a toss what you feed your PFB mine ate TicTacs and Fishermans Friends only but she is still BF at 12 so Im happy :)

MerylStrop · 03/05/2011 20:56

Your comment about parents who can't be bothered to feed their children properly is tosh, albie, sanctimonious tosh at that.

Bananamash · 03/05/2011 20:56

YANBU

Agree with scaredoflove - complete scam

usualsuspect · 03/05/2011 20:56

No one gives a toss that you bf Smile

MarianneM · 03/05/2011 20:58

"Some parents don't feed their DC's an appropriate diet so follow on milk is probably aimed at them. It's easy to make up and they don't need to think...job done."

Yes, and as some people have said here, it all seems to be about convenience.
