I'm probably going to regret asking this but what is the worst thing thats happened to you when it comes to spiders?
I had one run across my face in the middle of the night YUK!
And my dad stepped on a big big! spider during the night without realizing! and next morning he found its dead body on the bottom of his foot! And my poor mum felt sick when she realized that had been in the bed all night.

I for one am waiting for my first encounter with a house spider this spring/summer and it could be any day now coz they have already started next door!

sorry i'm rambling i just hate them so much!

In labour with 14 yo DD...finally got moved into theatre for ventouse delivery...felt a bit chilly, due to nerves and temp of theatre so got my dressing gown out my bag. HUGE black bastard spider ran out of the arm as I put it on, I was so hysterical the midwife thought something was realy wrong!

toomanyblossoms The Avondale spider is the same as the huntsman but somhow accientaly got introduced to New Zealand at some point. In NZ their called Avondales as they were only found in the Avondale area (at least that was originally!!) they are now getting a little more widespread though as I lived in a beach suburb not that far from Avondale.
They are the spiders they used for the 'Arachoiphobia' filmShock!!! They are not poisnous but the sheer size of them is what makes them so damed scary!!
Since living in UK ive not been that botherd by spiders cause so far ive only seen quite small ones.
There are only about 3 venimous spiders in NZ and as a whole they tend to stay clear and its not offten u see them. Most common prob the white tail(at least it was).
There are NO snakes in NZ though!!!!! (another thing im terrified of but think its the fear of the unknow thing).

Hmm well after being on this thread the other day - today I was chatting to a friend and felt an itch at my neck - yep a garden spider - squished and quickly thrown onto the road - boak.

One crawled in my Dad's ear while he was lying in bed! My Mum had to pull it out with tweezers. He was so calm about it - I'd have been hysterical.

I swear British house spiders seem to be getting bigger.

Eurgh. I had a BBQ last summer in my garden in England. Sitting on the fence was a MOUSE SPIDER. Google it. No really, go on...! It haunts me now. Furry at the back, leathery at the front. The horrors.
When I was about 14, I was watching TV with Mum, brother and sister, and felt something run across my arm. Looked down, and it was one of those gigantic house spiders that only old houses seem to harbour. Cue me running about, Benny-Hill style with my mother chasing me to try and get it off my back. Then calming me down whilst unbeknowst to me the beast is still on me, and her soothing back rub is actually her trying to flick it off my sweater. All going swimmingly until my little bro comes into the kitchen where I am just calming down and say 'OMG, that's the biggest spider ever on your back'. Little shit. And so began the whole process again. Rather karmically, he is now much more scared of the things than I am...

& you're really that scared of spiders??? The lot of you???

Really?

izzywhizzyletsgetbusy · 05/05/2011 05:14

I'm with ifancyashandy on this one - spiders rock and I love 'em.

I think they're living longer AmazingBouncingFerret - at least they are in my house as they don't get stomped on or consigned to the garden.

Some of my arachnid housemates have been in residence for years and they seem to keep on growing bigger - Sid & Nancy were more than 4" across including (bent) legs before they died of natural causes and climbed the spout to spider heaven.

I used to have a Boris that lived in my house in the UK - have I already mentioned on this thread that he liked to check out what I was watching on TV? He'd saunter across the living room floor, diagonally towards the door, stop in the middle of the floor, turn and watch the tv for a bit - if he liked it, he'd stay longer, if it was crap, he'd turn and continue his walk.

Couldn't do that here... I actually don't mind most of the beasties but as I've said before, redbacks and white tails in the house are a big No no, mouse spiders ditto (but haven't seen any yet); wolf spiders I can deal with but they get chucked out; black/grey house spiders can stay to deal with the mozzies/flies, ditto the daddy long legs (spiders here, not crane flies). I don't think funnelwebs come into the house but if I ever find one in the house, that's when it gets fumigated.

My dh was bitten by a spider. 24 bites, on the back of his neck, remained for about a month. They were painful rather then itchy. It happened the first time he slept in our loft.

HairyBeaver · 05/05/2011 13:02

I'm really glad I live in the UK! Would actually die if I saw any of the big spiders you lot have seen. Just reading this thread has sent me into loads of goosebumps

thelittlefriend · 05/05/2011 13:07

One morning I put my dressing gown on and went downstairs for a shower. Went to the loo first and as I glanced in the mirror whilst washing my hands I realised there was a bloody massive spider in the ends of my hair by my neck. I went nuts and screamed like I was being murdered. The spider ended up dead in the sink and I left it there all day without going back in to the bathroom until my dp got home to get rid of it. I also remember that I was really hungover which made the whole experience even worse!!
