To have done this to the dog walking couple at the beach today?

Me, DH, DD and DS went to the beach today - very busy - lots of people there enjoying all sorts. Lots of families with kids mucking about and quite a few dog walkers. It was all really nice and I was sat with DS soaking up the sun helping him build sandcastles and just generally people watching, when I notice a couple walking a dog near the sea.

I saw the dog do its business and just carried on watching as they were in my line of vision anyway, the totally didn't pick the dog dirt up and started walking off. They were too far to talk to so I grabbed one of DS's potty liners and scooped up this huge shit and tied it up in the bag. I then went over to the couple and asked if that was their dog, they replied yes, so I said, 'oh you appear to have left this behind' and handed them the bag. They looked completely surprised and said thank you. I just smiled and walked off back to DS. There seemed to be a bit of discussion between them and looking over to me (sat about 150m away) but eventually they just went on their way.

It's not the best beach or has the cleanest sea but there were loads of kids and adults mucking about in bare feet as you do and it would have been really disgusting to have stood in that pile of crap. I do also hate to see people not picking up after their dogs and I wasn't rude or unpleasant about it, I promise! So, WIBU to have done this?

What public loos?

coffeewhitenosugar · 02/05/2011 19:40

PrettyCandles - that's so funny, you have made me lol too!! Love it! Grin

Sunshineonacloudyday · 02/05/2011 19:44

silentcatastrope I think you're here to wind us up at every beach that I have been to there has always been a nearby toilet. Unless you can explain why you haven't found a toilet by the beach.

firesoup · 02/05/2011 19:46

should the dog even have been there? most beaches are no dogs from may to sept.

thekidsrule · 02/05/2011 19:49

Good for you

personally (and i talk as a ex dog owner of 16yrs) i DONT think dogs should be allowe on beaches in the summer months at all for this very reason,i couldnt think of anything worse than coming across a pile of poo on a sunny day with kids in tow

TheMonster · 02/05/2011 19:49

YANBU. I wish I had seen their faces, the dirty buggers.

silentcatastrophe · 02/05/2011 19:49

Because there isn't one.On one of our favourite beaches, they have finally clicked and installed a dog poo bin. Nothing for humans, needless to say. Unless you are at a resort with a promenade near houses, I have rarely found a loo.

midori1999 · 02/05/2011 19:50

Not at all unreasonable.

If I am walking my own dogs and see someone neglecting to pick up their poo I cheerfully say 'oh, have you forgotten poo bags, I have some spare' and pass them one. They always look embarrassed and have to pick up after their dog then.

takethisonehereforastart · 02/05/2011 19:52

YANBU.

We clean up after our dog and if we are out and see a dog owner who isn't picking up after theirs we offer them a bag "as you seem to have forgotten yours."

We do wait until we are sure the dog is finished though. DH was once shouted at by a woman for not picking up after ours and she hadn't actually started yet, she was just getting into position.

As long as you were sure the dog was finished and they were deliberately leaving it you were being very reasonable.

oneofthosedays · 02/05/2011 19:56

Yes, I made sure they were definately walking off then had a bit of an internal debate about it before deciding to go for it and pick it up. Was not pleasant, I don't have a dog and have never picked up after one before and DH deals with the cat tray Grin

It was very brave of you! The world would be a better place if more people picked up their own rubbish. I am very saddened that people make the most almighty fuss about dog poo, but are less bothered by broken glass, half eaten food, plastic bags billowing in the wind and all the other detritus people leave behind, including their own shit. If you saw someone having a crap in a sand-dune, would you bag it up and present it to the culprit?
BTW, I do NOT think you are being at all unreasonable. I hope the people you stopped will take more care in the future.

YANBU, of course. There's a woman who walks her new dog round our street and I just know she's responsible for the sudden rash of jobbies everywhere. I'm itching to catch them in the act one day so I can pop up and helpfully but meaningfully offer her a bag.

ChristinedePizan · 02/05/2011 20:46

Thank goodness it's May now and no dogs allowed on the beach during the day again until September (although I have seen people using a spade to bury their dog's shit - that's going to be nice for the small child who decides to build a sandcastle there isn't it?).

silentcatastrophe - what do you do when you're on the beach all day and need a poo?

silentcatastrophe · 02/05/2011 20:47

We have had people laying turds in front of our house and on the pavement down the road. Who gets to pick those up?Shock Yuck yuck yuck yuck yuck

silentcatastrophe · 02/05/2011 20:48

I don't spend all day at the beach.

Good for you this is a real bug bear of mine. I spend a lot of my time in the quiet, pretty seaside village of Borth which is totally spoilt by the amount of disgusting dog poo on the pavement. The pavement is very narrow and you continually have to dodge treading in it. What I want to know is these people letting the dogs do this are having to walk the same streets WHY don't they find it revolting too ? I don't think lazy people should have dogs.Rant over !
Feel like setting up some kind of clean up operation there any ideas ?

oneofthosedays · 02/05/2011 21:26

Loo was a 20min walk over the sandunes at this beach and through a wooded area, luckily I took the fold up potty that I keep in the boot for wee emergencies and both DS (3) and DD (7) discreetly used that on the beach but were told to save no 2's for home. If I hadn't taken that I wouldn't have had anything to pick up this humungous dog shit with. I have to say I have never seen anyone (bar toddlers in a potty) crapping on a beach, but then again I don't tend to wander through the dunes - who knows what goes on in them!

bigbumum · 02/05/2011 21:30

lol op i thought you were going to describe how you picked u the poo with a kids spade and threw it at the couple !!!

NO excuse its antisocial behaviour imho. (the leavign of the poo, not the throwing of poo)

mitochondria · 02/05/2011 21:44

Yay it's the first of May! Now I can glare at the dogs on the beach because they're not supposed to be there. My mum enjoys telling the owners who haven't seen the massive signs / who think it couldn't possibly apply to them. She hands people back their litter, too. I'm not brave enough.

We now may be able to build a sandcastle that doesn't get pissed on.

We go to beaches with toilets as one or both of my children are almost guaranteed to need a poo.

Have only had to bury poo once and that was in the middle of a wood.

mitochondria · 02/05/2011 21:44

Ought to add - that was toddler poo, not one of mine.

Vallhala · 02/05/2011 21:55

Good for you! This dog owner congratulates you.

It's idiots like those people who have caused so many beaches to become dog free areas, which for those of us who are responsible owners is a great pity.
