AIBU?

AIBU to think that the way the Prince and his new bride are being portrayed as some as 'ordinary' is nauseating and stupid?

This is not about them as people- they may be very nice as people. It's about the propaganda to portray them as some kind of 'ordinary' couple by the press and media. How can they be ordinary? All the hogwash in the press about the bride's mother having a say in the wedding as if it were some kind of nice, middle-class do, now I'm not saying she did not have a say, but does anybody really believe that had the palace NOT agreed with her, her views would hold any water? The nonsense about the new bride's sister and Prince Harry getting together Hmm

I cannot believe people are gullible enough to swallow the 'they are just like us' line. Surely whether for OR against the royals nobody can truly believe this?

Grin sausages

Or for that matter the various monarchs in attendance from all over the world, being cheered by a million people, having large tracts of central london closed for the day etc etc etc etc

That sort of thing is well bog standard in my neck of the woods Grin

To get noticed round here you have to have your clothes made by real elves, leave the church by stepping onto the end of a rainbow, and each guest has to give you a gift inolving one of the original wonders of the world.

Take away the crowds and the day would have been nothing special. It's the 'people' that make them into something other than ordinary. Take away the discussion threads - same thing. I wonder what the wedding would have been like if noone turned up to watch... [csmile]

LOL Sardine....

Not one to gossip BUT it seems that the Middletons may have inherited rather a lot....

Erm...her parents are millionaires.

Have to say....I'm ordinary and I didn't have a fly past at my wedding last year Wink

but it was bloody marvellous all the same!

Lots of people are millionaires, CC!

In that part of Berks, a very high proportion of the houses are in the 1m plus category.

Her parents were both BA cabin crew then they left to build up their own business and because they worked hard at it and they had good ideas, they were succesful. It's not that unusual!

moonstorm come off it Grin

Take away the crowds and you are still left with westmninster abbey with whole trees craned in, mahoosive rolls royces, soldiers on horseback with full ceremonial garb on, a full orchestra in the church plus huge choir plus buglers plus organ, the top man in the CofE doing the main bit of the marriage, I mean blimey it goes on and on and on?

Unless you live near me Wink this stuff is simply not ordinary!

Kate went to super-posh schools, I wouldn't say she was ordinary either. V rich and v posh, upper middle class. Not many people like that about, certainly not ordinary.

clitorisorclitoraint · 01/05/2011 18:39

Exactly SQ. Not 'ordinary' in the least and I find it insulting to 'ordinary' folk for the media to persist in describing her as such.

Even leaving aside the busines of his being second in line to the throne, their educational backgrounds and wealth alone put them in the .05% of the country. How can that be ordinary by any definition? Confused

I too think that Kate appears to me to be a normal girl, no different from the a lot of the girls that are friends with my son. Her parents didn't start off with a lot of money, their company has done well and made a lot of money. They will be seen as nouveau riche in a lot of circles as they actually had to work for their money. She had a good education, like many thousands of others who go to fee paying schools or to state grammar schools. She went to University like thousands of others from all backgrounds. She happened to meet and fall in love with a Prince. Lucky girl? Depends on your opinion of the life that she now will have. I live in Newcastle where Princess Beatrice goes to Uni. She lives a "normal" live in a "normal" student flat. Presumably she may also meet a "normal" boy who happens to go to the same Uni. Any of us who have sons or daughters at uni could end up in the same position as the Middletons. This is certainly something that would not have happened 20 years ago. Things absolutely have changed - I think for the better. I still wouldn't want to be them though!

I agree catchme. It is just boring. I made no secret of the fact I was going to enjoy watching the wedding. I am not a fervant royalist by any means but just love the pageantry, the music and the Frocks!! I have been amazed by the many comments on my facebook by so many people (and a lot of them teens and 20 somethings) who felt the same. My DH is a news cameraman and he said it was an amazing day to be out and about. People moan about the cost! The cost was 20 million (about 5p each). Can you imagine the enormous amount of money that will have brought in tourism. also, compare that money to the money being spent on the Olympics. I know where I would prefer my 5p to go. Smile

Report
SybilBeddows · 01/05/2011 18:58

if it was £20 million how can that be 5p each? I thought there were about 65 million people in the country.

motheroftwo haven't you read the OP?

The thread is about the media's preoccupation with presenting them as ordinary. And how it's a bit silly, really. I don't understand why catchme sees that as mean spirited and I don't understand the relevance of your post at all!!!

I think that Carole Middleton would quite likely have been a member of NCT, doing coffee mornings etc. She has a family history like the majority of the population. They have worked to earn their money and they have paid for education-thousands do the same -as explained by the private v state cat fights on here!!
William hasn't had an ordinary upbringing- but he can boil an egg, clean the house etc.
Good luck to them-who on earth would want to be anything other than ordinary? Not me.

Kate's father's family includes a wealthy 18th century merchant who started a fund for his descendent's education. don't we all wish we had one of those in the family. I avidly do my family tree but turn up more miners than merchants.

It has just struck me that maybe the people who are saying that this was an absolutely ordinary wedding of utterly ordinary people, are the same ones who got very upset on the budget threads when people pointed out that earning (insert anything in excess of about £80k) was absolutely not ordinary.

'I think Kate comes from a relatively normal background '
yes going to a £30k per year public school is a 'normal' background! And doing nothing except make herself look pretty since she left uni 8 or so years ago -again just like the rest of us.NOT
She is very physically attractive (although I suspect with unlimited time and money most of us could be) But looking good does not mean she is a 'lovely' person-she may be but we don't know that.

clitorisorclitoraint · 01/05/2011 19:07

Has she honestly not worked in the 8 years since graduating? She must have been doing something surely?
