We are going to a bbq tomorrow, just a small one. Just us and one other family invited.

The host family are "vegetarians" (they do eat fish but not meat - they are bringing their DCs up like this too).
They have said that we need to bring whatever we want on the bbq. I think it would be rude to turn up with meat and then expect them to cook it. I was going to suggest bring veggie stuff anyway. DH thinks I am being odd and that it is absolutely fine to turn up with, say, burgers, and give it to them to cook for us.

Who is bu?

Thanks!

Just ask. Not offensive at all. I'm veggie. But eating meat is a perfectly normal thing to do and doesn't 'offend' me at all! Just a different choice.

Everybody's different, like carrots I wouldn't cook meat on the same grill, but wouldn't think it unsociable to have two - that's what we did last time with our mixed group of veggie/non-veggie friends.

Mmmmm HALLOUMI!!

SpringchickenGoldBrass · 30/04/2011 13:05

If you are the sort of uptight pissy vegetarian who won't allow anyone to eat meat near you, you have no business inviting other people round unless they are as joyless and self-righteous as you are.
OP, ring your mates and ask - as they said 'bring whatever you like' it is not at all unreasonable to say' Did you mean meat, or meat free only?'

Sn0wflake · 30/04/2011 13:07

I'm veggie and wouldn't want to have meat on my BBQ and would be OK with people cooking their own meat on a BBQ they brought but honestly would rather we all eat veggie....but then I don't eat fish and so they may feel very differently.

Also I don't know how to cook meat so would probably end up killing everybody.

nickelbabe · 30/04/2011 13:08

I would definitely prefer 2 barbecues.
If I knew that there would be meat-eaters coming, I would borrow a second barbeque from a meat-eating friend, so that I could have both.

Sn0wflake · 30/04/2011 13:09

I don't think that is called for SGB. When in Rome and all that.

MsScarlett · 30/04/2011 13:09

I am a veggie and I personally would have no problem with it. My asuumption is that that is what they mean by asking you to bring what you want to eat. i.e. we will provide veggie food, you bring your own meat if you want to eat it. :)

alarkaspree · 30/04/2011 13:12

To me, a barbecue is a meaty kind of meal. I cook a lot of vegetarian food although I'm not vegetarian, but I would struggle for ideas for a veggie barbecue. I wouldn't mind having a meat-free barbecue, I just wouldn't be able to think of much.

I think they expected people to bring their own meat to cook.

But asking them is indeed the way forward.

nickelbabe · 30/04/2011 13:18

ah, alarka - you need to find some new recipes Grin

there are loads of veggie barbecue ideas!
veggie kebabs being the most obvious....

Cat98 · 30/04/2011 13:31

Thanks. See - I would have no problem with a veggie bbq. It's dh that is a big meat eater and for him, bbq means meat!

Halloumi, onion and pepper kebabs - would you put anything else on the? Any seasoning? Sound nice!

Sn0wflake · 30/04/2011 13:51

Olive oil on the veggie kebabs....I also include mushrooms and courgette. I also like asparagus just laid across BBQ. If you get large portabello mushrooms and goats cheese they make a lovely burger.

nickelbabe · 30/04/2011 13:54

I put chunks of courgette and onion on mine as well

nickelbabe · 30/04/2011 13:55

oh, yes, I love the big mushrooms with cheese in - if you can, put some rosemary under the cheese.

Cat98 · 30/04/2011 14:00

Thank you. Dh had grudgingly agreed to go veggie. Bet the other family bring loads of meat now!

You could bring fish, since they eat that, we bbq ours all the time. Or veggie dogs/burgers. Or bbq pizza.

jojowest · 30/04/2011 15:24

take bloody great big steaks and demand they cook them nowhere near the crappy vegetables :)

pozzled · 30/04/2011 15:31

As a veggie I would (and always do!) expect to divide the bbq in half, one half for meat and the other for veggie food, with utensils kept separately. And if there were plenty of people around I'd prefer someone else to deal with cooking the meat. But personally, I wouldn't expect everyone else to eat vegetarian just because it's what i choose.

I would interpret 'bring whatever you want to eat' as meaning meat is ok.

Carrotsandcelery · 30/04/2011 18:44

Big mushrooms work well on them as do chunks of courgette and yy to olive oil on them. If you can put crushed garlic in the olive oil and then brush it on then even yummier. Keep everything quite big and chunky.

Fresh corn on the cob also works well on the bbq, again brushed in a little oil.

mayorquimby · 30/04/2011 18:52

I'm with your dh. I'd assume it's fine to bring meat and wouldn't have thought twice about it. Now that you've raised an element of doubt you should just ring. I'd think it rude on their part if they invited friends around to a bbq where they were to bring their own food and then expected friends to spend their own money on food which was to comply with the hosts preferences.

ShoutyHamster · 30/04/2011 18:54

BBQ is the only time I eat veggie sausages and the like - the Fake Meat stuff. Tis fun and different (way to go in the crazy hamster household), usually we don't eat burgers and whatnot. So you could always take some quorn sossies and nice salad if you are a bit stuck.

Otherwise, corn on the cob on strong sticks with lovely chilli dips (or whatever takes your fancy). Big mushrooms, grilled cheese and gherkin burgers. Veg kebabs.

To be honest I think BBQ isn't a great playground for the veggie of soul. When we've had BBQ we've always also had a big pan of veg chilli on the hob and a pile of baked potatoes as well (either in the oven or on a bonfire) to balance it out, as lots of us are veg lickers.

Fun fun fun
