why is it superior to point out a glaring error - surely it is simply passing on a little knowledge - if you're not interested then don't look (seen that comment loads on threads around here)

And if someone pointed out I was making a mistake, I'd learn from it (and I make many mistakes, grammatical and otherwise) - it's part of being human learning something new every day.

I used to work in recruitment - the first glint of a "should of" meant the whole application got binned. It is economically divisive not to know the difference in many circumstances.

'the word you are stretching for...'

Nope, couldn't imagine how that could possibly be construed as a superior tone. I mean, you sound so nice :)

southeastastra · 29/04/2011 20:10

how are your math? Grin

really you obviously care, but others don't! that's why there is a special little topic area for it.

weird for a recruitment officer to bin so easily, what area of recruitment did you deal with?

I've always found it interesting that German speakers are generally very proud of their ability to use their language correctly ("Rechtschreibung"). Their bookshops always have literature on German grammar and usage rather visible, whereas here it is at the back of the shop; their signage and public correspondence and so on never contains grammatical errors; and if you go over there with mother tongue English and render into German correctly phrases of the kind we are discussing here they will complement you on your excellent German.

Unsurprisingly, many of them speak and write better English than most Brits.

YANBU.

For what it's worth, when I started teaching more than 30 years ago, this error simply didn't occur. Nor did people say it.

It seems to be a generational thing. DD says it, and it grates, far more than when I pick it up in children's writing. And yes, I am snob about it; it makes sound like a bogan.

"Her", of course. :Blush Fall off high horse.

Can I ask a stupid question about dyslexia? - sorry for ignorance. Someone mentioned dyslexia upthread and I am interested to learn.

I thought it was a disorder that affected spelling, that made it difficult to recognise words, made you do things like get d and b the wrong way round, affected word recognition etc

Does it affect grammar too? Make you not know the difference between, for example, have and of so that you think it is (sticking with the example) should of instead of should have, because your brain can't tell the difference? same for loose and lose, you don't know that one means not tight and one means to not win?

So it's not just about visual word recognition is it? It's a full on processing disorder?

HecateQueenOfTheNight · 29/04/2011 20:53

you don't know would be better worded as you can't tell

I'm happy to accept that I'm no scholar re grammar, but I dislike missing the "ly" from words. eg. He did brilliant. I do have a friend who does this and it grates my carrot a little.

YANBU.
