he wears a signet ring so has chosen not to wear a wedding ring. thats what sky news says anyway!

Pfriend · 29/04/2011 11:23

Well, its not as if people won't know he is married....

StatelyPoshBeartrothal · 29/04/2011 11:24

not impressed!

why must anyone wear a ring?

StatelyPoshBeartrothal · 29/04/2011 11:26

i think you either both do (i.e. exchange rings) or you both don't.

mousesma · 29/04/2011 11:27

So what? A lot of men don't wear a wedding, including my DH, it means nothing.

mousesma · 29/04/2011 11:27

wedding ring

shesparkles · 29/04/2011 11:30

Wedding rings for men only became fashionable in the middle of the 20th century.....my dh doesn't wear one, doesn't bother me

StatelyPoshBeartrothal · 29/04/2011 11:33

Oh fair enough
Just my opinion - you either exchange rings as a sign of your commitment, or you don't. One person with a sign of their commitment and one seems a bit odd to me

I found it surprising too.

IMHO, i think it is more understandable if both choose to, or both choose not to.

i never understood why women wear one when their husband's don't. i've never heard of it the other way round. has anyone else?

whatever works for them i guess. i wouldn't be happy with it personally, but there's a lot of things lots of people do that i couldn't accept - so i don't. as long as tehy're happy that's all that matters, just with any couple getting married.

susall · 29/04/2011 11:35

Sometimes its to do with the job they do, FIL was a mechanic and viewed a ring as dangerous, my dad was a maintenance engineer and always wore a ring but made adjustments to his so it sat flat, had a raised ridge when he bought it. Its the same when a woman does not take her husbands name or take the title Mrs, its not wrong its just personal preference.

StatelyPoshBeartrothal · 29/04/2011 11:36

Yes, personal preference fine, am just surprised. I ahve heard of no rings but never thought one would and the other wouldn;t.

This was the norm up until the 1960's - 70's. Woman wore a ring, man did not.

Highlander · 29/04/2011 11:41

wedding rings are traditionally a sign of ownership of a woman. No ring = owned by her father. Ring = owned by her husband. That's why women are 'given away' from father to husband, they are not independent beings.

Rings as a symbol of a couple's commitment to each other is a very modern concept.

I told DH I wasn't wearing a wedding ring unless he was (I'm not really a ring person). We walked into church together, there was none of the 'obey' nonsense and I haven't changed my name. I don't wearing my ring in winter; that one just about did MIL in, bless her Wink

StatelyPoshBeartrothal · 29/04/2011 11:42

Why don't you wear your ring in winter? [cconfused]

squeakytoy · 29/04/2011 11:43

We both had rings when we got married, but neither of us wear them all the time now. Husband has a job which means jewellery is a safety issue, and I just dont wear much jewellery unless we are going out.

Highlander · 29/04/2011 11:44

my hands get almost exema-ey (cracked and bleeding) and it's worse around my ring. I also hate lathering on hand cream and getting it stuck under my ring.

Yes, I could take it off to apply hand cream. And that's how my engagement ring ended up in a clinical waste bucket. Long story......

AlistairSimnelcake · 29/04/2011 11:45

Because her hand shrinks in cold weather and it falls off?

My dad doesn't wear a ring, I grew up thinking men didn't wear wedding rings but it's just because he doesn't wear jewellary.

StatelyPoshBeartrothal · 29/04/2011 11:48

I get that HIghlander, horrible, isn;t it?

NoobyYahYahYah · 29/04/2011 13:18

My Dad doesn't wear a ring either. He used to do a lot of welding, and witnessed a particuarly nasty accident when he was younger in which his mate lost his finger. My Mum sometimes doesn't wear hers as its a really thick band and it rubs.

Highlander/Stately - I get that too Sad No amount of cream seems to help in winter, but its getting a bit better now the weather is warmer. I've only been married for 3 years, I want to wear my rings!!

GingerWrath · 29/04/2011 13:22

With the job he does it's probably a practical thing, jewelry and Search and Rescue don't go very well together.

StatelyPoshBeartrothal · 29/04/2011 13:24

But not wearing them for pratical reasons is very different to just not exchanging them in the first place

OP posts:
BlushingBumps · 29/04/2011 13:25

what happened when they said their vows then if she didn't have a ring to put on him?

meditrina · 29/04/2011 13:38

He doesn't wear any rings, ever.

Here's the longish thread from In The News when this was announced at the end of March.

StatelyPoshBeartrothal · 29/04/2011 13:40

thanks Meditrina
